Well, this is funny at least to me. I have been working as a handyman to fill in the financial gaps. Now I have to laugh at people who accuse me of being too expensive like the land lord of the property next door.

I gave her an estimate to completely replace the garage doors of her units next door to me which she said was too expensive. The guys doing the work just reskinned one of the doors and it came down under its own weight (as in tore itself out hinge and all from the jam because the wood was rotted) and landed on one of the tenants vehicles. And what makes me want to laugh even more is the fact I am doing wood work on a different person's house removing and replacing termite eaten wood. Ultimately I do not drop garage doors on people's cars!

You want cheap, you get cheap. Hope they were insured because if I was the tenant I would be hot as hell over their screw up. What is even funnier is they are not Mexicans.

On top of that if I was their boss I would be all over them for being so slow. Two guys take three times the time it takes me to do the same job.

That is comedy!laugh

Because in Los Angeles a lot of dorks think Mexicans do nothing but messed up work and screw things up. There are problems with transient labor but a lot of it is unfairly assessed upon them. Some of the best concrete men and stone masons are Hispanic, period! I have swung my share of shovel with them as well and they will turn some though earth for you.

The difference is when the guys doing the work are having too much fun on the job so to speak.

So if you think I am bagging on Hispanic labor you are wrong. I am laughing at the racial biases placed on people for what individuals do.I also am laughing at all the cheap skates out there!

POW!

Good...I'm glad you cleared that up, cuz I find racism extremely distasteful...

In Britain the building trade has been overtaken by the Polish. They work for half the price of British nationals. Im not suggesting they do a poorer job though, i have heard they are generally pretty good and very hard working. My dad was a builder most of his life up to a couple of years ago, but all the work dried up, people were not willing to pay what he was asking, and he was not willing to work for what the Polish would. I got him a job where i work.

Them yes, me never. I never do anything half way. I also do not take stupid chances with property damage as a result of my work.

For instance, on the job I am doing right now I had to pile the wood I pulled for removal so that no one steps on a nail or trips over it. The job is two stories up. I am not about to just toss wood to the street below especially with the nails in it. I actually have a removal plan that saves me work and does not involve me risking busting a window or beaning a pedestrian when I remove the wood for disposal. On top of that I have to rope myself off because I have to do some of the work I need to in an area where I have to hang from the roof. I do work like Spiderman. If I screw up there I am screwed.

The thing is I have to wonder how many handymen out there really know how to do the things I do for home repair. I am the guy that does the impossible.

The other thing I don't do is let myself half ass anything. there is a right way, a questionable way, and a wrong way to do anything. there is only one way for me. That is why I still got work!

Phuque, you are right, racist people do suck.

I grew up in Inglewood in teh 70's and felt the sting of reverse racism as a kid. I learned to be prejudice from other's prejudice. It took time to rise above that and that is why I am so politically charged against a lot of today's current drives for Equality because it has been at the implementation of racist and segregationist policies.

I also have come across Hispanic pride that basically is Mexicans hating white people and blacks. Nothing like walking into a body shop looking for work as a mechanic and hearing "there is no work for you here gringo," as well as other little things that make me shake my head and want to show my lack of appreciation for these interlopers coming to my community and bringing their hatred with them. it is the same thing to me as them pissing in my living room.

Just remember that racism comes from all directions and is not exclusively a white thing.

Well if it takes them 3X as long to make garage doors fall on tenants' cars, they're not doing too badly.

I can't count the number of times dad has been told he is too expensive on his bids and then called back later to fix the work done by someone cheaper. It then becomes even more pricey by the time he fixes what was screwed up.

And why is it rascist when its truth? Most of the jobs dad has had to clean up after is work done cheaper by Mexicans.

there is never enough time to do it right. But there's always enough time to do it over

The bitterness of poor quality lingers much longer after the sweetness of a low price.
