I was doing some resarch on ich/ick and on one site it said that using non-iodized/plain table salt is a good preventitive measure for some diseases, adding about tablespoon per 5 gallons was alright for freshwater tropical fish. Does anyone do this? Is it really a good idea?

I don't have any fish yet, I was just reading about ich/ick, because I hear alot about it researching fish and it seems like a common disease, so I wanted to get some information about so I know what to look for, how to prevent, how to take care of ill fish, etc.

You can add salt to a fresh water tank. Ick is a very common disease and i have always gotten the Ick medicine from the local fish store. Just treat the water before adding fish and when ever your fish look like they have white chicken pox then do it again.

I wouldn't use table salt, it has iodine in it, could be poison. You can get aquarium salt at the local pet store, which is usually pure sea salt.
