Indonesia floats idea of man-made swine flu

As swine flu continues to take its toll, claims surface that the deadly four-part flu virus could have been created for “bio-terror attacks.”

Speaking at a conference to reassure the public over hers government’s response to the swine flu threat, Indonesian Heath Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said Tuesday that the controversial virus could have been man-made.

She declined to elaborate on her claim but she had previously accused Western governments of making and spreading viruses in the developing world to boost pharmaceutical companies’ profits, AFP reported.

“I’m not sure whether the virus was genetically engineered but it’s a possibility,” Supari said.

Supari assured Indonesians that the deadly virus could not survive in tropical countries like Indonesia which was the worst hit country by the bird flu virus.

“H1N1 survives in countries with four seasons. The type A H1N1 virus hopefully won’t be able to sustain itself once it enters the tropical climate of Indonesia,” she added.

No cases of swine flu have been reported in Indonesia. It has banned imports of live pigs and pork products.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised its pandemic alert to level four, which means the virus is capable of significant human-to-human transmission. The virus has so far killed nearly 150 people in Mexico and has been reported in eleven countries, including Mexico, the US and Spain.

Several other countries from Colombia to New Zealand are investigating suspected cases.

Health experts say the virus comes from the same strain of virus that causes seasonal outbreaks in humans. They point out that this newly-detected version, which is highly contagious and fast-mutating, also contains genetic material from the types of influenza that afflict swine and birds.

Is it just possible that the strain which mutated fits the genetics of a specific sub-section of the human race (i.e. mexican) because that is the subset the virus initially mutated within.

Give it time and further mutations will develop that will effect other sub-races of the human.

Actually, this thread is based on vapor and some nutcase conspiracy theory. Canadians, Scandinavians, Japanese and people in 10 other countries have gotten this. Because nobody has died except in Mexico and one 2 year old kid here who JUST left Mexico AFTER getting sick there isn't even noteworthy. That is, unless you decide that somehow, some evil madman has devised a way to INFECT everyone but only KILL Mexicans. It's just stupid.
This thing started in rural Mexico where there is virtually no health care and no disease control like we take for granted here.

I probably should check the news this morning to see if the proof (someone non-Mexican dying) is out there yet. According to the CDC, it won't be long.

Finding a race specific chart on the CDC is proving to be missing, interestingly enough, I thought they would keep track of those kinds of things, for all of their fun and informative statistics charts you hear referenced all the time.

I couldn't find where that earmark was to do research on swine flu....just how to control the odor and waste...i could be wrong

To be fair, I think that Fanta have asked about earmarks rhetorically, meaning that those Mexicans wish they have paid some taxes towards the research and production of a vaccine, that could combat the swine flu.

The flu mutates in animals every year. IE pigs and birds are the most recent and most severe.

It will happen every year and we will not be able to be on top of it.

Whether it could be race specific or not, I doubt it. I would bet that the flu shots given here have some deterring effect to the death ratio. Also the reasons this virus is striking the younger and stronger has to do with the auto immune response in the body of the people who contract it. Their immune system is actually hurting them while trying to fight off the virus.

The child that died in our country was actually visiting from Mexico when it happened.
