Bears kill 2 dogs in yards
Officials say food shortage could lead to more encounters by Lindsay Nash, LNASH@CITIZEN-TIMES.com published May 8, 2007 12:15 am ASHEVILLE — Every night, Steve Schneider takes out his family’s two miniature schnauzers to the fenced-in backyard at his Ballantree home before going to bed. But the 11 p.m. bathroom break Sunday night turned deadly when a mother black bear with cubs nearby killed one of the 13-pound schnauzers. On the same night, a black bear killed another dog in a Madison County backyard, said Mike Carraway, a N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission officer. “(My husband) heard the growling and the dogs screaming and a big mama black bear had my schnauzer in her mouth,” said Susie Schneider, who was mourning the loss of 8-year-old Schotzie on Monday at her home off Sweeten Creek Road. “It’s scary, very scary,” she said. The mother bear and four cubs climbed a the fence to get to a birdfeeder at the home, part of a city development off busy Sweeten Creek road. |

Scary isnt it fanta! We had a family that was camping mauled by 2 black
bears and a five year old girl was killed. The mother spent a good spell in one of the top trauma centers here. Thats a shame the two dogs died. |

Hmmm...hungry bears huh? Wonder why?
Wonder what used to be in the residential estate before it became a residential estae? Not so hungry bears perhaps? Woods? Maybe even a creek with fish in it? Bees too, perhaps? |

|
jess its the drought causing this. Global warming. All i know is it was
my old crew at the forestry that captured those two bears last year. I sure dont miss my job for sure!! LMAO!!! |

we have had the same problem with Mountain Lions here in South Dakota.
Last year they had to put down 3 here in Rapid City, one across the street from a grade school. The city police also shot one in a parking lot in Deadwood last year. As we encroach on the animal's habitat encounters are bound to happen and they are not usually friendly. |

espeacially when they have their cubs. 4 is unusual. Ive seen them with
2 quite often, but 4 is strange. A black bear aint a grizzley but even today 400 lbs isnt unusual.. Yes Jess, that development they are talking about is new and the residents are mostly floridiots and part time residents! A native boy like myself might have shot it which would have been worse because the cubs more than likely would have been put down. I think this bear escaped, and Im glad about that. Its not really its fault, but it will probably be back in a few days. The cold snap has delayed the blueberries and rasberries..so they are hungry. |

you arent that far barbie, I know the attack your talking about and it
is considered a local event. We are just on the other side of the park!! |
|
|
|
thats sad but what is worse is that the poor bear and her family had to
come into a neighborhood just for food. It just goes to show you how much of our land we are ruining without even thinking what we are doing to nature. |

Wild honey bees are dying off at an alarming rate. This is one source of
food for the bears. It also may have a long term effect on us because bees pollinate most crops. |

Bear killed after break-in
by From staff reports published May 10, 2007 12:15 am e-mail this Print this MARSHALL — A resident in the Little Pine community of Madison County shot a hungry black bear to death after the animal broke into a house. Susan Eldridge said the bear, which had been spotted days before in the neighborhood, first tore down her bird feeder and later turned its nose toward a trash can on her screened-in back porch. “It was on my walkway staring through the door at me,” she said. The bear crashed through Eldridge’s back screen door, breaking a panel of glass and dragging out a bag of trash Tuesday evening. Eldridge said the bear ignored attempts to scare it away, something that worried the mother of two young children. A neighbor shot the bear, she said. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission collected the body. |
