Topic: Let's Talk Guitar! | |

I always prefer open chords whenever possible (as opposed to barring). I
think it makes a "fuller" sound. Sometimes the changes are more difficult, but I prefer it whenever possible. Agree? "G Chord" I lay my pinkie down on the high E string (some say incorrect....not sure)...again "fuller" sound Finger picking patterns still elude me. "Tabs" still elude me. I LOVE the sound of the (Major to Seventh) change-up. It's "oddly appealing"...kind of the "Sarah Jessica Parker" of chord patterns. So far my favorite site for tabs & chords is Ultimate-Guitar... any suggestions? Let's talk guitar! *note*(I don't "hover" over threads, rather just check back from time to time) BUT VERY INTERESTED IN WHAT MUSICIANS HAVE TO SAY! |

I'm not really a musician but tab serves only as a starting point for
me. And lots of online tabs aren't right for what its worth. I play G the same as you most of the time. When I first started playing I used ring finger on high E string because my hand was too small. Just explore and do what works for you. And as Duane Allman said..."If you keep pickin it, it'll never heal" |

i TOTALLY AGREE WITh the open chords
THe sound seems to fill the room better and is much clearer I refuse to use tabs oe anything like that If I am going to remember something I would just assume figure it out by ear |

bar chords sound ok but they are not the same as open chords in my
opinion anyway |

Ok guitar players any tips for me? My son wants an electric guitar and I
have NO clue what to get or what to look for....help!!!! Sorry-not trying 2 hijack thread |

I waiver on the "helping sites". I learn much better organically and
tend to depend on the cheat sheet if I have it, but, if you just can't get that "1 chord", it's quite a relief. I don't know tablature(sp?) AT ALL. I'd like to learn for the reason mentioned above. What's the first song you ever learned? For me it was "Bad Moon on the Rise" (Bathroom on the right ) once I knew G, D, & A...I was OFF! |

broken 74...I recommend as cheap as you can go......if he sticks
with it...he'll let you know. |
Beach-don't remember the first song I ever learned...too long ago
Imbr-I prefer the open chords too, but if you're playing swing type stuff....the 3 note chokes are cool Broken-if you son is just beginning i'd get him an acoustic....you don't have to fool with pluggin in and everything....don't go too cheap...you want something with a decent neck so it won't be too difficult to play...but don't spend a whole lot of money...he can upgrade if he sticks with it |

hey broken
Start out cheap No sense in spending a small fortune on something right away If the interest grows then worry about quality later At this point in time he won't notice the difference in sound quality any way |

The first song I learned to play was smoke on the water

I see GM50's point...especially for a "youngin". I would agree that
"action" is important. action= the distance of the strings to the fretboard (how hard the little guy has to push down to get a good tone) |
I guess I overlooked "Smoke on the Water" and
"Rust Never Sleeps" |
GM50's got a point
It's harder to press down on the strings on an acoustic If he decides to play faster music he will find that the electric is much easier to play but he will have much less effort playing the electric after learning the acoustic |
don't forget Iron man Beach
LMAO |
I'm unusual I guess in that I use extra light strings on
everything.....I prefer the action |
hey GM50's
I hear that I am really weird I got (on my electric) Th low e and the a are heavy and everything else iis light as hell Kinda weird but it's all about the action like you said |

REALLY wants electric so that is what I am getting him......ty again guys |
