Topic: Texas mandates the silencing of students | |

DALLAS — A federal appeals court on Monday upheld a Texas law that requires public school students to observe a daily minute of silence in order to pray, reflect or otherwise remain quiet. BTW...my son has never had a moment of silence and he is now a senior in high school |

for a school or even a teacher to say it's for prayer is against the constitution and could be sued for that

for a school or even a teacher to say it's for prayer is against the constitution and could be sued for that What about the Texas High School football teams? Don't they usually say a prayer before every game? |

Don't they usually say a prayer before every game? around here....no. because of the same reasons. "organized" prayer isn't allowed and people could sue for it. that's why they have meeting clubs that might meet at lunch or whatever. if they want to pray as a group...those that want to pray do it away from the school |

there have been law suits in the past over this issue which is why the schools are very careful about it now.
which they should be because not all students pray or believe in the same religion. which is why a moment of silence....not prayer. it can be used for many things. some small texas schools might still pray but as soon as someone complains....they will have to quit. it's unconstitutional to impose the beliefs in public schools |

moment of silence is just sneeking prayer threw the back door.
It's like the I.D. thing. What kids need is a moment of science. |

“moment of silence” - does that really hurt anyone??? wow...it's not like it's an hour or anything. if students want to pray....let them if students want to take deep breaths....let them if students want to think about if they did their homework or studied.....let them no one is being forced to pray or anything. and again....it's not like it's a long time or anything maybe the teacher needs a moment of silence to get her mind ready for the day ahead This is true. I need MANY moments of silence just to get through the day. And....NO...I don't have ADD. i get to work early just to have quiet time to get ready for work. i don't really even have the time to pray before hand because i'm getting ready to start the work day. i really don't see the big deal of a moment of silence...it's not like it's a mandatory prayer class that lasts an hour. and people can use that time to reflect on the day ahead, pray, get a moment of sleep....whatever Forcing ritual regardless of content or lack of content is not education, THAT is the point. |

again...it's a FREAKING MINUTE. it is for relaxing before they start or whatever they want....geez...it's not like they are forcing kids to get on their knees and pray.
maybe it's just another thing for people to get riled up about. there are more things in life to worry about |

Do you really see anyone other than the christians fighting for this? Do you see any Taoists, Buddhists, Satanists, Wiccans, Muslims, Hindus or any other non christian based sects asking for or fighting for this? That makes the biggests statement of all. A minute of silence is only the beginning. |

Taoists, Buddhists, Satanists, Wiccans, Muslims and Hindus can pray/meditate as well...and yes there are some that like it. no one is forcing anyone to pray...ever since I was a kid they changed that because of law suits.

well when and IF it happens....then do something....in the mean time just keep an eye out....but it is silly to argue about somehthing so little right now when it is for everyone to use in their own way.
it's not an entire class or anything....come on. there are more important things to complain about in the world....especially when it doesn't effect you. it's about texas and as far as i know...me, seamonster and txgal are the only ones in texas here. i was born and raised here and even when i didn't believe (during my son's younger upbringing) i wouldn't have seen anything to squawk about. it's A MOMENT to reflect, meditate, pray, sleep....whatever |

So there! ftw honestly....i don't mind a good debate....but i see too much childness from adults here and in real life to have filled me to the brim. i personally would rather learn and ask questions about others and if i find something to point out i will. but i won't sit there and tell someone they are wrong because i don't agree with beliefs. but i did think of a good saying earlier today for people that annoy me...wanna hear???? lol |

What is wrong with our children today, when I was in school we forced them to let us stand silently instead of say the Pledge of Allegiance; where is testicular fortitude?
