Topic: I need a hug... | |

This subject is bitter sweet for me but here goes anyhow. My two
youngest are 5 & 4. Since birth we knew my 5yr old was in a sense not a normal baby. I have spent 5 1/2 yrs now badgering Dr.s trying to get help for him to figure out what he's got so we can learn how to help him and get on with our lives. The Uof Iowa wouldn't diagnose him because "he was too young". BUT, they said he was one point away from being Mentally retarded. This place is suposed to be highly recommended. Bunch of idiots!!! He saw a Psychiatrist and in 15mins she diagnosed him as being ADHD, ODD w/learning disabilities. My point. I moved down 4mths ago and have gotten more help than I had in the 3yrs up north. His Dr. here is the Head Doc for the disabilities clinic. Well, we finally got his diagnosis confirmed as of today. He does have ADHD, ODD w/learning disabilities but alot of it stems from "Autism". Yes, we finally got the diagnosis that he has Autism, with a tough of Aspergers. I am soooo happy we have finally figured this out for his sake so we can find out what we need to do to help him live a better life. I am so totally exausted after fighting for him these past 5 1/2 yrs I just can't stop crying. I guess I just can't believe we finally did it! I just love my baby and wouldn't want him any other way! Thanks for listening I just really needed to vent. |

We went through the same problem of trying to find out why one of my
daughters was having problems, nothing major but something was not right. They gave us more reasons and excuses, but no answers. Just remember, doctors and lawyers for that matter are still "practicing" their trades, if I told people I was "practicing" my construction trade, do you think they would hire me.The best thing your son has going for him is your love and support. God Bless you and your family Meeshep. |

Oh, honey!!! It is not the end of the world. Both of my boys (11 and
15) have autism spectrum with youngest having Asperger's and my oldest having PDD/NOS. They are such a joy! Now that you have a firm diagnosis, the important thing is to start helping him learn to manage his symptoms with things such as sensory integration and techniques for making learning easier for him (lots of repetition in my youngest's case). Good luck and if you need any advice, just holla! (oh yes, and my youngest also has the ADHD/ODD/obsessive compulsive which all go hand in hand with autism spectrum disorders ) |
