So, a nine year old victim of incest becomes pregnant with twins.

What does the church do? Why try to stop her from having an abortion. Having failed at that they excommunicate all involved in the procedure except the child because of her age. However her age and the fact she wasn't able to carry a child let alone two to term in the opinion of her doctors without killing her didn't seem to matter to the church.

Thank goodness the church wasn't able to stop the abortion.

Tell me...who did the morally right thing here and who will be damned?

Aside from the bastard who got her pregnant?

Rape row sparks excommunications

A Brazilian archbishop says all those who helped a child rape victim secure an abortion are to be excommunicated from the Catholic Church.

The girl, aged nine, who lives in the north-eastern state of Pernambuco, became pregnant with twins.

It is alleged that she had been sexually assaulted over a number of years by her stepfather.

The excommunication applies to the child's mother and the doctors involved in the procedure.

The pregnancy was terminated on Wednesday.

Abortion is only permitted in Brazil in cases of rape and where the mother's life is at risk and doctors say the girl's case met both these conditions.

Police believe that the girl at the centre of the case had been sexually abused by her step-father since she was six years old.

The fact that she was pregnant with twins was only discovered after she was taken to hospital in Pernambuco complaining of stomach pains.

Her stepfather was arrested last week, allegedly as he tried to escape to another region of the country.

He is also suspected of abusing the girl's physically handicapped older sister who is now 14.

Intervention bid

The Catholic Church tried to intervene to prevent the abortion going ahead but the procedure was carried out on Wednesday.

Now a Church spokesman says all those involved, including the child's mother and the doctors, are to be excommunicated.

The Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, Jose Cardoso Sobrinho, told Brazil's TV Globo that the law of God was above any human law.

He said the excommunication would not apply to the child because of her age, but would affect all those who ensured the abortion was carried out.

However, doctors at the hospital said they had to take account of the welfare of the girl, and that she was so small that her uterus did not have the ability to contain one child let alone two.

While the action of the Church in opposing an abortion for a young rape victim is not unprecedented, it has attracted criticism from women's rights groups in Brazil.

That poor child.

Indeed.

Can you imagine going through that and then being expected to give birth...at the age of nine.

Ridiculous.

It's not religion I have a problem with - it's all the people and their one-way beliefs (not judging everyone - just those that judge everyone in black and white based on their own personal beliefs). Haven't gone to church for anything besides weddings in 6 years and I don't see myself going anytime soon.

The trauma of being sexually abused, then the pregnancy, and now this publicity. Family members may be punished. She is too young to understand it all.

Tired old beliefs and tired old traditions the sheeple are too afraid to face.

Would it not be appropriate if God were seriously equal opportunity and gave everyone in that man church Herpes? It won't kill you but it sure as hell will make one very miserable! The gift that keeps on giving!

What about saving the mother's life? Does that not count at all to these pro life schmuck and schmuckettes?

grumble grumble grumble grumble grumble grumble grumble

Damn bible thumping holy rollers! This is coming from the same people probably that also believe homosexuality is acceptable as long as it is kept within the church!

it's just another form of inquisition is all. this is becoming more known, but they've been able to cover it up for the most part. the church said that only a few hundred died in the inquisition, but if you do light research, it comes to possibly over a million, and people who died from heresy, 10 maybe 15 million. even with a slip of the tongue or an unrightful blame with no back-up.....the church is blood thirsty. it's the biggest vampire of all, especially with money.

Hmmm.
An innocent child, scared shltless from being raped repeatedly and being pregnant, facing possible death.
Catholic Church, protects and defends child molesters.
Ain't much good at math but, I'd lay 10 to 1, anyone who condemned the innocent Child.

This baby has suffered more in her 9 little years than I have and I'm 55.
After all that, I certainly pray she sees experiences only the blessings she, the meek, is promised.

I sincerely hope the dang church stays away from that poor child now, so they don't give her a life time of guilt to deal with on top of her ordeal.

Excommunicated, big whoop!
