Quick question for all you moms, dads and nurses out there.

My kiddo had strep throat once already this year. Went to the doc last Saturday morning because of similar symptoms. The rapid strep test was negative but because my daughter presented with all the same symptoms the doc put her on the antibiotic and sent the culture to the lab. They called me tonight and asked how she was doing because her culture came back positive for strep and staph. (throat culture)
I got this over a voice mail because I was busy with the other kiddo who is sick so I didn't get to ask what kind of staph.

Is staph infection common in the throat? She is feeling much better and didn't miss any school this week. I did keep her home from basketball tournaments last weekend, of which I am now glad. Just wondering if I need to be looking out for anything else with her in relation to the staph infection.

A quick aside too, I think I now have a high sinus infection which is causing really irritating dizzyness and I'm assuming I could have contracted something bacterial from her?

She could've contracted it by drinking after someone that has it,sometimes it's asymptomatic and the person doesnt know they have it.It doesnt normally happen in the throat,it mainly happens in a locker room setting or like what happened to me,a bug bite getting infected. Is she on antibiotics? If so make sure she takes every single bit of it,dont want it turning into MRSA.Sinus infections arent usually caught from other people,so you might want to check with your doctor on that one.I hope everyone gets better soon!

Thanks for your reply. I was researching this stuff on the internet and got varying opinions. I guess I'll have to wait 'till the AM and call the doc's office and just get the particulars re: the staph infection. She has a lock down sleepover thingy at the church tomorrow night and I don't want her putting other kids at risk, if there is some sort of incubation period or whatever. She's been on antibiotics for 4 days now so should be good to go.

if she got the shot she should be fine after 24 hours- they last for 10 days usually

even with the oral antibiotics she should be ok after 24 hours as long as she is fever free.

strep is highly contagious so make your other kiddos are ok- and get yourself checked too- Momma doesn't have time to be sick right?

Hope you all are feeling better

Thank you my friend. My special girl came home running a fever this afternoon from school and was up from 1:30 am this morning until 5 am with laughing spells (probably seizure related). This should have been my first clue that she was getting sick (she always has more seizure activity when her immune system is down) but I didn't connect the 2 until they called with a positive strep/staph on the other kiddo. They run a sick bay on Saturday mornings at our doc so I imagine we will be there again this week. Unless of course someone gets real sick before that. Typical day in the life......

p.s. It was oral amoxicillin that they put her on this time. Last time the rapid test for strep was + and they gave her a shot.

yeah the strep shouldnt take long to clear up,when I had staph the doctor put me on a 2 week course of antibiotics and after that I was fine.Since she's already on amoxicillin they'll probably just keep her on that for a little while. You can definitely rule out MRSA as what kind she has, that stuff is hard to kill and the doctor would've seen it on the the test results and had her in the office already if that were what it was.If she's past the contagious stage of strep, she should be ok since staph isnt airborne, just no sharing drinks or anything like that.

Yeah, the oddest thing. They called me back again, this time while I was working. Left a message that said the Staph was the typical nasal passage stuff, nothing to get alarmed about. The Strep was a different strain than they normally see. What the heck? Basically still treating it all the same, but just an odd course of events. It's amazing all these variants of stuff out there.
