If you have a problem with authority, not a good idea. Sorry, that is one of the BIG ones they push in any service. And, most civilian services are the same way.

I will give this advice bro.....this is war time....the military operates completely differently than during times of peace. When I joined (USN) I had no real concept of what I was getting into.
If ya gotta do it...consider the Airforce. Enlisting in the Army or Marines or National guard or Army reserve means that you will definitely be put in harms way. (Don't really want to hear about you getting shot or blown the hell up) Navy.......Been there and done that.....Dude....there ain't a day off until you hit port....that can be a looooong time. That and on a combat ship (Aircraft carrier) you are dealing with 5,000 men...no women...no alcohol....and more drugs than you will ever encounter in your life. Apparently non-combat ships are different. Just really check your options and above all else.... you really need to understand...Your recruiter will lie through his teeth to get you to sign. Don't believe a word that comes out of your recruiter's mouth. |

My son had a free ride through art scholarship, then his dad died and he kinda fell behind. He joined the military went back to college, then was told to get his affairs in order, and had to drop out again. Then he traied it again, another "get your affairs in order" thing then he didn't go. So he went back again and finally graduated after trying for three years to get there. He was hired in Conoco Phillips, after 860 apps, and only 12 jobs to be had. He now works there, making great money. He also took fire training through Conoco, he was flown to Texas to do it on their credit card. Now he is certified as a firefighter. Now guess what? He is deploying to Southern Bagdad. This after he was supposedly OUT. He is stop lossed.
But the good news is this; he gets his college paid for now. They will pay for it all. I say...whatever you decide, will be what is best for you. The money incentives are great, along with all the training you can get for certain jobs. Free college and if you are ever deployed , you're kids get benefits for college as well, along with insurance. Good luck Kat |

Unless they send you on swift boat patrol up the Tigris, you generally remain somewhere near the Continental USA, saving/rescueing people, combating drug-runners, etc.

I hear there is no drinking in Iraq either.
When joining the military...there are promises you won't be going somewhere bad. Kat |

But I agree with that one woman who said she always wanted to marry a firefighter or a guy in uniform.
There's just something so damn sexy about a guy in uniform. ![]() ...And the big guns they carry doesn't hurt either. ![]() |

Sexy in a uniform is nice....but, that ain't what is important. Ain't nothing sexy about a prosthetic limb or a funeral after a run in with an I.E.D.
Look into non-cambatant field speciealities....clerical...medical...mechanical.... even that is no guarantee.... got a friend who does anchorman work for Air Force TV. 6 months till retirement and now he has been shafted into convoy driver in Iraq. Just bear in mind....in the military during war time...no matter what your job....you can and probably will be placed in mortal danger. Sure, Iraq may have an end in site...Afghanistan does not. |
