Topic: Vaporizer advice | |

My girls are sick. I need to go to the store and buy a vaporizer today. Does anyone know.....should I get the cool mist or the warm mist? They have colds and they can't breathe at night even when I give them decongestant.

They both work. However, the warm steam vaporizer usually has the little reservoir to put in the vapor solution.
I use the steam one myself. You can then put any essential oil in the reservoir. You will, of course, want to use eucalyptus or the pre-made solution made just for vaporizers. |

Cool mist is the way to go. And the cheaper the better...
(My dad is a pediatrician, this is always his recommendation, to his patients and to me, for his oldest grandson... the one who likes just like him!) |

FROM MY EXPERIENCE cool mist is for sinus issues and warm mist is for chest congestion

vicks makes a good one .

Nighttime, do a hot vapor bath, give benadryl and vicks vapo rub, and prop them up on pillows to ease the breathing.

Okay, they have sinus congestion. And, if the pediatrician says cool, I'll go cool. And, cheaper is always nice to hear.
thanks guys, I really appreciate it. I hope we get some sleep tonight. |

Nighttime, do a hot vapor bath, give benadryl and vicks vapo rub, and prop them up on pillows to ease the breathing. Hot vapor bath? What is that? They sell bath stuff for kids with the vapo stuff in it. This is the "steam part"... Then they cool mist just simply keeps the air humid and easier to breath. Cool mist humidifiers last ten times longer than the others and the cheapy ones don't need all that filtered water and crap. They serve only one purpose, to moisten the air. Oh, and my dad's other secret.... cough medicine is about as effective on kids as smoke detectors... so don't bother until they are well into their teens. |

I've talked with several pharmacists and doctors and everyone says either one will work.
They both put moisture in the air and that's what you really need. Warm / hot air ones are far cheaper than the cool mist ones. I just never got a hot ait one around little kids as the steam could burn them. My dad used to just boil a huge pot of water to add moisture to the air in the house. |

this is a good cheap product I looked it up for youhttp://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10316298 thank you Tina! I had never seen that before. I think I'll need to go with the water one though as the air is VERY dry right now running the heater. |

Thanks. |

My dad used to just boil a huge pot of water to add moisture to the air in the house. Mine too, in the winter. He stuck it right on the wood stove. In the summer he ran a humidifier... I remember we had the same one my whole childhood.... it was this fugly brown plastic thing. I'd bet money he still has it... My dad was a firm believer in sleeping in humid air. Every night.... |

Oh, and my dad's other secret.... cough medicine is about as effective on kids as smoke detectors... so don't bother until they are well into their teens. I have long suspected this. Not to mention it is so hard to get them to take it because they all taste awful. |

also... as an FYI. Since humifiers are more popular in the winter, they're more expensive. I picked up 2 very nice 70-80 dollar cool mist humidifers in spring for around 15 dollars.
They put them on clearence every spring summer. So maybe buy yourself a cheaper model for now and keep an eye out for the clearence ones. They'll be marked down very soon. |

I've got to get the vaporizer to get some moisture in the air. |
