Flamethrowers work well for wasps. A bit hard on the drapes and
furniture though.
We have those wasps as well. They're more common in urban areas. I've
had them in my hedge and eaves before. Not anymore. They don't fly at
night. Good time to deal with them.

Flamethrower??? EEeekkk!!!

Nnooo...not a good move..it is not that big a deal moving them, and in
reality, it is why they are hanging around, the indicators, what is
going on in their natural world...that concerns me...

Lee, I hope you don't take everything I say too seriously!
Although a flamethrower might be kinda cool to own. Do you think it
would impress the ladies?laugh

Another thing we never really had here was flooding. Over the last few
years we have had some. I've only been in this town for 3 years. Some
long time residents have been telling me that they've never had problems
before. The water table has come up significantly. I never had any
problems in the last 3 springs but this year it's been crazy.
Some people are attributing it to all the drilling for oil and gas in
the area. The entire province has had some sort of problem with the
drilling activity. Some can't use their wells anymore. They have H2S
(hydrogen sulphide) coming out of their kitchen taps. The second
deadliest gas known. I've lived in a couple places where you get the
rotten egg smell from the water.
The other thing drilling companies are doing is pumping fresh water into
wells to drive the oil out. Billions of tons(not gallons) are being lost
forever.

im glad you were only joking about the indigenous people of Australia
damnitscloudy .their wisdom was far superior to that of the ignorant
arrogant invaders of their country who tried to implement genocide upon
them.thank goodness that did succeed.most of them have been desimated
culture destroyed they can never be repaid enough for watt they have had
to endure at the hands of their invaders.they are beautifull people they
had bomerangs they understood the science of flight long before us dumb
so called civilized idiots ever took to the air.

No Harry I didn't take the flamethrower idea seriously...laugh but the
picture of me with one was the eeek! comment...

From what you were saying, and I may have it wrong, that the town water,
is polluted? With the H2s? Is that where your water comes from, or is it
ground water?

What is being done about it?

Sounds like a really scary situation to be in..to have that coming out
of one's taps...

And KariZ, you are so right..the stories of the persecution and violence
towards the Indigenous Australians is horrendous...the massacres..the
annihilation of their lands..all in the name of progress..

Seems like we have progressed closer to our own demise..ohwell

The H2S isn't in the ground water, it's coming from deep water wells.
Fractured formations from oil and gas drilling activty. Luckily my water
is directly from Edmonton via a pipeline. Its very clean. Some other
acerages and a farm I've lived at here in the province aren't all that
stellar.
A few years ago a friend taped the local evening news for me. It showed
a woman lighting the water on fire coming out of her kitchen faucet!!!!
H2S. Highly flammable and extremely poisonous. They sold their farm.
As per usual the oil and gas companies here are allowed to do whatever
they want. Nothing has been done. There are "studies" being done. This
has been going on since they started drilling in Turner Valley in the
early part of the last century. Big business and money come first.
There have been numerous complaints of people and livestock becoming ill
and dieing from the flaring of gasses from different types of processes
involved in the oil and gas field. Mainly the flaring of unwanted gas
right at the point of extraction. If it were just the animals we have
living in the wild, nobody would say a word. It wouldn't be news worthy.
When people start getting sick and livestock in large numbers start
dieing from it, it's all of a sudden a scoop. Unfortunately the media
doesn't follow up on what's happening and wouldn't want to "offend" the
wrong people so the reporting dies.

Harry that sounds awful....

What wildlife is left there?

I was just having this conversation with a friend not three hours ago,
about new's coverage of bushfires here, and when we have them, there is
a cost put to the loss of property..houses factories..

and maybe if you don't blink in the whole huge human drama of it all,
there is a 10 second mention of the effects of the fire to the wildlife.

Our bushland in areas is vast, well appears vast, until you go up in a
chopper or plane, then see there are 'corridors' of green.

'Corridors'...is all the wildlife get here, and we are sprawling further
and further into it. Clearing more and more land for housing, and for
farming..and reducing these 'corridors' to less and less.

There are trees here in this state that have lived for hundreds of years
and are dying. A hand full of people give some of their precious water
to try and keep them alive...

Reminds me a bit of the movie...soylant green.

That movie was classified fiction. It is fast becoming factfrown

Morning allflowerforyou

Jess, that is exactly what happened here in Ireland under British rule
in the past centuries. All the forests where chopped down by the gentry
and the timber sold. Here you only find woods that are about 20 - 30
years old and younger. And they are not natural really. They might
become that in years to come, but as of today.....frown

Yep those worms have it made.

They are great recyclers.

Work hard for the land.

Take up very little space.

Never harm anyone.

and make wonderful pets:smile:

Something just struck me...we are here whineing...I just went and stood
on my deck...looking out to sea, watching the birds, the lorikeets doing
their evening hoot and holler through the valley.

Ok, we know it's happening, we see it, feel it, can look further than
our own backyards...we have enough vision to see what is happening...

What do WE do to make it different?

How do WE make a difference?

I don't want to moan about it...I want to make a difference..

We all want that lovely roo, but I think we have quite forgotten how to.
See all these little creatures and bugs and plants still have the
instinct to do what they always did, even if it is killing them
sometimes because of human interference.
I think we have lost it, or better buried it, shouldn't that make us
humble?ohwell

Lee, I haven't figured out what I can actually do about it yet.
It is really depressing to think about it somedays.
I could go on for days about all the environmental atrocities that have
been committed here. Does it do any good? Doubtful. The rest of the
planet already knows the same things I do.
I've been in all corners of my own part of the world and talk to almost
everyone I meet. It's unreal the things I've heard. The things I've seen
with my own eyes are even worse.

Hi Rivame and Andrea. Sorry, I'm just lost in thought, I'm not ignoring
you.
One thing I mentioned to Lee a couple weeks ago was the that I almost
hit a deer while driving home. I swerved to avoid it and almost crashed.
The animal population here is amongst the humans all the time. The
problem is that they're running out of room here as well.
THIS IS CANADA!!! We're the second largest country in the world! Only
about 33 million people.
How is it we're running out of room?

Kid That is a trap we all fall into....the questioning of what one
person alone can do. Usually we cant find a solution so we just give up.
I am guilty of that.If each and every person on this planet did just one
small thing towards saving it.. it would make a difference.

It need only be that once a week we walk and not drive the car.

Plant one tree.

Dont buy things in plastic bottles........the list goes on.

And everyone of those things we CAN do.flowerforyou
