Topic: How many others belive that marriage is | |
---|---|
I can't wait to find the person I want to marry! I am not embittered or jaded by the idea of commitment. I realize many people say it's 'only a piece of paper'; however, by not getting married -- to the right person -- it displays a lack of permanence. There is no stability or sanctity. Playing 'house' with someone is about the lamest ritual I can think of .... not really but it serves my purpose for now. I don't care what soceity says; I am not a breeder so my idea of marriage is not to settle down and become old; I am not a slave to the pressures of religion, and I hope I don't fall for someone who allows those thoughts into his head as a reason NOT to get married. I think it's immature when someone thinks they need to avoid marriage because of societ, et al. That is actually a chicksh*t attitude. If you meet the right person why resist for a flimsy reason? I am a hopeless and hopeful romantic. I could never be with someone that doesn't feel the same. Melody ![]() |

No I don't. Despite one failed marriage I still believe in that institution. I think that with most other man-made institutions like politics and religion, that the problem is actually with people. I mean the heart and soul of marriage is two people making a commitment to spend the rest of their lives together come hell or high-water. Yes I totally believe in that. ![]() ![]() |

Why do you need a contract to make a commitment to spend the rest of your life with someone? I've never heard a satisfactory explanation for that. |

I've been hurt and disappointed to many times to have it done to me legally as well. |

Why do you need a contract to make a commitment to spend the rest of your life with someone? I've never heard a satisfactory explanation for that. For what it's worth, Mitch, I think people can make a lifelong commitment without getting married, my grandparents did. They didn't get married until I was almost an adult. But, to answer your question with my opinion, I think that if you're simply living together, it's much simpler to give up and move on, without giving it your all first, in many cases, that permanent, legal and emotional level of commitment is simply not there. Marriage does make splitting up harder, no doubt, if things don't work out, but in cases of married couples, I think they are much more apt to really try to make a go of the relationship before making the choice to get a divorce. |

And no lawyer got richer off my divorce, did it myself ![]() |

Marriage itself is not the problem. It's the two people involved, one or both of them, who lack the ability or desire to make it work.
