Topic: Reinstate the Draft? | |
---|---|
I wish I had a time machine to send you back to Nazi Germany. I think you would change your mind about thniking America is anything close to a tyrannical dictatorship. You are blessed to live here. You're just too young to know it. You don't have to go nearly that far, or far back to see tyrannical dictatorships. Most countries in the WORLD draft civilians to serve in the military. And most don't get body armor, vehicles, good weaponry or even fed. And you get "out" when you're dead. Lots of African and Central Asian countries just have guys come around and chop off your wife and kids heads, arms, feet if you don't serve whichever nut is needing gun-hands. Or if you do. I suppose ignorance is bliss and youth are 99% blissful these days. At the risk of sounding like an old kook, if you think America is mistreating you...move somewhere else. You'll be BEGGING to get back in. Betcha! It starts with a draft, to end like Nazi Germany. If anything, we should be trying to be different than attempting to repeat the mistakes of others. |

those that feel they need not serve their country
are taking benefit of freedoms that they did not earn thus if they do not pay for their freedoms they are no better nor worse than anyone receiving any other govt benefit such as food stamps and medicaid to name a couple i am not saying there is anything wrong with collecting those benefits but do not complain about them if you do not want to serve your country and if you read the thread i suggest other serving methods in place of military |

Are you kidding? It's exactly what we need to protect American values. no reason to reinstate a draft. if they reinstated a draft, u would be seeing mass riots lol. u shouldnt force people to do something they dont want to do. i agree that everyone should do some type of service for their community/country whether it be americorps or the peace corps, but fighting is just not what some people want to do, nor should be forced to. In the 60's, there were protests and escapes to Canada. I seriously doubt, there would be mass riots and Canada is no longer an option. Anyone who thinks wars are going to go away or end is living in a fantasy. There are way too many people for this planet to sustain. War is one way to help control the population growth. Just for numbers sake. How many of the generation of folks 18-28 year range would it take getting killed off, to put a dent in the future population growth trend? With the way "they", say the economy is headed, what would all those troops overseas do if there was no war or conflict for the US to be involved in. I'm all for reinstating the draft along with giving the women equal responsibility to register with the Selective Service. I believe most would be honored and capable. Let's see real change. |

We already have the WORST form of a draft. It is called the STOP LOSS program, where you draft those who have already served. Many have had 3,4 deployments! They cannot take it mentally and are breaking down - suicides at record numbers.

Why do you believe they came up with Stop Loss The most of you aren't supposed to come back whole or alive. JMO |

I remember signing up for what was then called the "Selective Service." I do believe that was what it was called.
There were no real wars at the time and the country was doing pretty well. I had to sign up as a American male citizen. I figured it was my duty and if called I guess I would have a military background now. I was not called and so I have no experience to share except that as an American male... when asked to put my name on a list to serve the Military of the United States of America... I did. I had no desire in a time of peace and prosperity to pursue a Military career but if called I surely would have gone. The Unites States is currently suffering a severe economic crises. Perhaps my business skills and college education are serving my country as I am employing people who have children and dreams. I think there are many ways to serve ones country. Surely being in the Military is one of the finest and truest of serving experiences. I also think of our country as an ant hill where all manner of workers both military, workers, gatherers, nurturers and more keep the ant hill thriving. In the great Wars 1 and 2... our way of life was saved not only by soldiers but the men and women at home building tanks, planes, bombs and bullets. I would say this however... If a draft was implemented today, due to severe conditions, I would again add my name to the list and serve in another capacity if my country called on me. If my country decided I would better benefit it by serving as a military man on front, or supportive, lines for the survival of the way of life I have enjoyed... I would. I think that is what is missing in many of our younger generation. The actual realization that our freedom was WON and is not just a matter of entitlement. That it can be lost and forever must be protected. That being said... I do not endorse or agree with many of our over seas operations these days or the way they are carried out and our fine Military personell are exposed to harm for a benefit I do not fully comprehend. I figured I was not as smart as the government officials... until Bush... then I realized even an idiot can lead our country. For this reason I would question a "mandantory" draft. RW |
