Topic: Bill Gates vs Steve Jobs | |
---|---|
I'm playing "catch up" here today...
"Allow me to ask your opinion. Who do you like better? And why? I will give a rundown list after a few posts. Of course this is not necessaryly including the fact that Bill leagueally stole Steves' Desingers ideas (os code) to make windows. According to my information (as all on this post), The first deal that Bill made with IBM for a gui, was a great turning point in the history of software for the computer." WOW - a loaded question and yes, I read all the other comments. I have no opinion about those guys (and if you believe that... I have a bridge I'd like to sell to ya!). They are so far out of my league mentally, financially, entrepreneur wise and all that, that it would be wise for me to keep my opinions to myself. I do build websites, have found some awesome software to facilitate my efforts but do have to say... I am glad they had their little war and we can all enjoy knowing each other at this point in time, probably because of it. Having been in the "computer related" business since keypunch programmers were kings (I was one! Yep, back in the sixties) and software programmers (I was one of those too) made pretty good money, I can honestly say, I am grateful to anyone who carried the load at any time to make our association with each other possible. 'nough said. Have a great day all, Verb |

I thank all you people for the posts on this great topic. This is the
exact kind of intrestests that I wanted to spark. Yea. I thought that it was pretty cool that xerox was really who introduced the GUI, but it was still based on the Linux code. And yea Gates obtained the code 'legally' in a sense but not really. He (microsoft) was suppose to be a mac partner at the time.(That's why the code was shared with him.) As far as games go, Linux is getting alot better at it to make it worthwile. Older games work pretty well configured in WINE. As far as the new very high graphical games, CEDEGA works wonders. (I think that I spelled that right). The real reason that people use windows now is that some people think that they have no choice. I know that you have heard of drms and such, and it is getting worse. "they" are tring to make it to where you have to use windows to do average tasks. Ultimately 'they' are the the ones deciding what progs that you can run on your windows computer. WE ARE LOSING OUR DIGITAL RIGHTS TO MICROSOFT. Freedom baby. Linux rules |

Hey I don't like Bill Gates,
But what are you going to do? Stop shopping at Walmart? Stop buying foriegn gasoline? Stop buying things 'Made in China" (yeah turn it over & read)? The only recourse is if we all band together and give the Man the collective finger W/ crotch grab at the Man |

Bobson,
Sounds like some excellent ideas, and far more doable than most people realize. |

Okay, we all know that our Great Bill didn't write the source code for
the original operating system he sold to IBM. He purchased it for a meer $200,000. He is a great business man. Bill and his wife give bundles of money to help out the less fortunate. As much as i haven't liked some of the os/applications he has allowed his corporation to release, the guy does wonders...... |

>> He is a great business man.
I agree with you that he is an -effective- businessman; if 'greatness' is measured by market share or wealth, then he's a 'great' businessman. For me, this does nothing to inspire any kind of respect whatsoever. There are also people our there who are great assassins, some people are excellent at being gangsters, others are fantastic at running a sweatshop. Mark Shuttleworth is also a great businessman, and IMO a far more inspirational humanitarian than Gates, is far more worthy of admiration. >> Bill and his wife give bundles of money to help out the less fortunate. Absolutely true, but I hate how people (not you, Yelm, I'm saying some people in general) try to make this into a testament to his character. (He has shown his character through how he has built his business.) What would you do with THAT much money? Of course you would try to find good uses for some of it. Its far too much for one person to spend on themself during their lifetime. |

********** My follow up **********************
By the way, I did get your anoligy Korangen. And you do have it totally backwards. **That's the real funny part. I don't think that anyone caught that.** Linux is truly more comparative to a car, in that it will goto and can be in more places, (can do more things). Not only confined to the tracks of a train like Windows. **It is true that Gates and Jobs has made the computer & software industry what it is today, but really that is the problem to. Technology is already evloving faster than we can keep up, but so many other technologys that has bright shineing futures were supressed to the point of controlled growth, if not death. These controlled growths hindered us as a whole in growth technology. Truth, Open source softwares growth into the desktop market will flourish from the inspiration of indivual users talents and creativity, therefore excelling technology to better assist us in a new world of daily computing. |
