That once a dolphin finds a mate, it is with that mate for life. Even if the mate dies, it will still continue to fly solo.

Boy you romanticize dolphins a little too much there. Wolves are the ones that mate for life like bald eagles. Killer whales also but Dolphins being monogamous?

dolphins, swans, lots of dumb animals do that.

Maybe it just never occurred to them that it would feel just as good--or better--to mate with another member of their species?
It's not like they got together and talked it over, you know.
