Topic: Good Fruits and Veggies!?

So i'm standing in the produce isle staring at strange green things, bright round things, and a really big green thing that looks like a male appendage. I've decided that i need to eat healthier food, so this is why i'm starring at these strange things.

Theres a problem tho...i don't know what to buy! I have never eaten, or tasted many veggies (peas and corn are all i've eaten), and i've only had apples, oranges and grapes.

So i need your all's help. Whats a good veggie to start with, and whats a good new fruit i can try? Anyone can tell i love sweet tasting things (my fat belly shows that off) so are there any sweet fruits and veggies?

I suppose that could depend on what you're eating it with. Green beans go good with chicken or certain types of fish. Potatoes are good with most meats. Salad is good anytime with tomatoes and carrots. If you want a snack...apples w/ pb, carrots or celery with pb or cream cheese....i could go on and on. maybe i'm hungry?!

Im a fan of any and all fruits and vegetables except for radishes and cranberries.

Stick to your basics at first: apples,oranges,bananas,strawberries,blueberries,grapefruit and what have you.

Good breakfast idea: chop up an apple and about 6 strawberries into slices of your choosing. Toss them in a bowl with blueberries and yogurt (I like vanilla or strawberry preferably organic) add granola or unsalted almonds. Great way to start the day.

Also, taste is habitual. The more you eat healthy the more you will desire that taste.

Bosc pears are a favorite of mine. Make sure they are ripe,they will be soft & will spoil quickly, so only buy a few at a time.

Sweet potatoes are good baked, you can do it in the microwave just like white potatoes.

It's hard to get good friut this time of year, so if you are dissapointed in something try it again when it's in season.

Find a local Whole Earth Foods market and you might be able to find free classes revolving around what we put in our bodies.

They also have free samples in the produce section.

Thanks! I'll try the breakfast recipe once i go out to that store. I've gone there a few times to drink their apple cider (with spice) and its really good. drinker

This sounds like what I have for lunch most days - it is quick and easy, filling, and I can eat it "on the go" - a GREAT choice!

I've been a vegetarian for about 8 years, beleive me you'll get used to all the fruits and veggies (even if you still do eat meat)

Healthy alternative: saute` (not fry) with some non-stick cooking spray.. and if you MUST use something "oil like" choose olive oil (just a smidgen goes a long way).

Try Kiwi's. If they are slightly yeilding to the touch they are ripe. Cut off the end and insert a teasppon between the skin and fruit and rotate and they will slip out easy to slice.

If you like sweet try boiling a peeled and sliced plantain. It is a cross between a banana and potatoe in taste. Great in Chicken broth with cilantro, and carrots.

Or acorn squash. This is a two for one treat. Cut it in half, scoop out the seeds and rub in course sea salt let dry. Spray with butter flavored cooking spray (Pam) and roast in a hot oven (425*) until golden. The seeded squash halves need 2 tablespoons butter, a 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1/2 cup chopped pecans in each half. Sprinkle with pumpkin pie spices and bake (350*) for 30-45 minutes. A fork will insert easily if done. Be careful the syrup will scald if it gets on your skin before cooling.

Blackberries + milk insert spoon and enjoy if they are too tart a smidge of sugar, if that seem un satisfying insert a yellow sponge shortcake into the mix for more substance to your meal.

If you haven't already, try jicama. It looks like a turnip but it's juicy, crunchy and lightly sweet. Cut it up like a French fry and serve raw with your favorite dip.

I myself am a big fan of the potato.
Baked, boiled, mashed, stewed, chopped-and-roasted and yeah... fried. It sounds backwards but outside of frying, use a heavier oil (olive, for example) because you'll use less for body and flavor.

I like crispy chow mein on top of rice and vegetables, with soy sauce on top. If you can find it, try a soy sauce called "Braggs Liquid Aminos" which sounds weird but it's a good salt substitute (using amino acids).

Take a zucchini and cut it into rounds, then take spicy fish batter and mix them in a bag.

You could make a stew with cubed potatoes, kidney beans, mushrooms, celery, peppers etc. Add or subtract whatever you like: leeks, onions garlic, red pepper.

I like red bell peppers for flavor raw (also good for dipping, I do that when I'm busy) and green for cooking, myself.

Go to the freezer aisle and gumbo the heck out of some okra.

If you find a mystery vegetable, Google it and maybe ask on here.

Nono, they werent even accurate. :tongue:

Should have been something along the lines of:

Fruit -Richard Simmons.

Vegetable - I dont know, but Stephan Hawking is much too active to be labeled a vegetable.
