an oxymoron |

Many types of music are not pleasant to a good deal of people. As long as some people enjoy listening to it and it has some kind of notes, and some kind of rhythm it is officially music.

The synthetic drum beat and spoken word are usually so high up in the mix that pitched instruments play a small role in the sound...
Such little weight for pitch makes it hard for me to call it music |

The two words are mutually exclusive to one another.

alot of people dont understand how hard it is to make rap music....now im not talkin about the ish that says how much money i got or killin people or ish like that.....but if u look at the lyrics and spoken word and vocab of the music then u will find that it truly is a art and the level of writing skills is very intellegent

You're totally joking, right?
Virtually everybody on the planet can talk. I don't call that talent. |

I did not say, nor will you hear me say, that all rappers are not talented. However, their talent lies somewhat in poetry and mostly in making money.

Rap sucks right now because its become so stagnant. Theres not any new sound, rap, or anything; which is how people like Lil Wayne get all those awards.

No, it's just crap!
Sure, it has it's place in history with the music industry, and dates further back than most folks really know... However, it lost it's true intent in the early 80's and just became...CRAP, minus the "c"! |

I'm rather selective with whom I listen to with Rap, but yes, it is still music, no matter how much others may dislike it

The REALLY early stuff done by fellas like Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, and Run DMC was kinda interesting, as they actually made an effort to make themselves (and whatever it is they were rapping about) understood. In other words, they made at least some effort to make an effort.
Unfortunately, a lot of the rap acts today are just sloppy. Heck- some of them can't even rap in time with the music or even rhyme their words. And having to go "Huh? Just WHAT the F#CK is this joker talking about!!!" while listening is NOT a good thing. |

In my opinion, it's only art if it's original. Puff Daddy and all those other fake rappers stealing all of those popular rock beats and making millions is not talent.
I'm a 2Pac fan myself. Although he may have sampled some beats, I believe he had true talent. *pours liquor* |

It is music, sure some of it is lame (every genre has it's garbage) but I call it music. I play a load of instruments and have been in several bands, there's not much difference between the traditional "music" we were playing, and the same music that is played live by rap artists. I have seen some rap acts where all they do is rap over pre-recorded music (like lip synching), but then again, some of the biggest acts that are supposed to be "real" music have been busted doing the same thing.
There are a lot of acts that use real instruments in their gigs and on their albums (N.E.R.D for example, The Fugees, OutKast, and on and on to the break of dawn.... haha ) so I'd say it's music, just because it's been overrun by lots of REALLY lame mainstream acts over the past few years doesn't mean it's not music, by some people's logic in these posts I could call a lot of other stuff "not music" as well. |
