John Ging, director of UNRWA operations in Gaza, said the attack at the compound caused a "massive explosion" that wounded three people.

A senior Israeli military officer said troops opened fire after militants inside the compound shot anti-tank weapons and machine guns. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity pending a formal army announcement later in the day.

Ging, who was in the compound at the time, dismissed the Israeli account as "nonsense."

Well, since Ging was apparently inside the compound at the time then he did not observe the exchange of fire. Ging is not in a position to know what happened.

Gunshots and an anti-tank missile were fired at IDF troops near the UN compound that was attacked by the IDF on Thursday, senior defense officials told The Jerusalem Post.

According to the officials, the IDF responded by firing artillery shells at the location of the gunmen, causing damage to the UN installations. At least three people were wounded in the attack and the building was set on fire.

The IDF's Gaza Coordination and Liaison Administration coordinated the arrival of five fire trucks to the compound to help put out the flames.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who was in Israel on Thursday to promote a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, expressed "strong protest and outrage" at the reported shelling of the UN compound.

Ban also demanded an investigation into the shelling, and said Defense Minister Ehud Barak had told him it was a "grave mistake."

Palestinians reported that an IDF tank shell also struck one of the wings of the Gaza Al-Quds Hospital midday Thursday. Witnesses said part of the structure was on fire. The army said that the building was being used by Hamas men who were firing on IDF troops.

Just because the IDF makes a statement that doesn't make it false.

Since the IDF has no other reason to point their guns
in that direction, it sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Israel would like nothing better than to have zero witnesses to its crimes. What better way to do it than destroy the UN headquarters and drive them into the streets. If by chance they happened to kill everyone in the compound then they would no doubt have blamed it on the Palestinians.

If you have an infection, you cut out more then the infected for what reason, so that it won't infect more area and to remove the area that might already be infected but not showing the symptoms... It is a drastic, but effective. Did Hamas care how many innocent women and children they killed with suicide bombers that walk into resturaunts and night clubs or busy shopping centers or buses?? The General Assembly Declarations,Conventions etc still went through. Just that the US didn't sign or agree to them.
Strange thing though. A nation with so much feeling about equal rights, democracy refuses to sign, agree with things that would bring just those things to other nations.

The US is NOT the major contributor to Peacekeeping missions. Much smaller nations contribute more.

Well if Israel didn't want witnesses then they probably wouldn't be operating completely out in the open where anyone can see them. There are plenty of witnesses. Ging just isn't one of them.



If the Israelis wanted to destroy the UN headquarters then they could have easily done that long ago.

But they didn't. Nor did they kill everyone in the compound. And there is no evidence that they are lying either.
