In many countries of the world, what we consider pets are considered food. I don't know of any recipes off-hand, nor do I particularly want to, but yes, people the world over eat "pets."

I live in Amish country and many of them eat horses here. I have talked to few that when their horse comes up lame they put it down and butcher it.

About 10 years ago or so, there was a Chinese restaurant that was rumored to have been using cat in their recipes. The Health Department got called on them, the police came too and they found cat remains in the trash bins behind the restaurant.
So I guess you can never be too sure of what you are being served anymore. |

While some Asian cultures do eat dog, it's not likly you'll be served any in a Chinese restaurant in the US. Chicken is cheap, dog & cat is not a viable substitute. No businessman is going to that that risk. Besides,if they had dog they'd save that delicacy for themselves, at home. This is what I was told by the owner of the Chinese restaurant I worked at years ago. It's common sense. Pets that dissapear are sometimes illegally are sold to research labs, & they would pay way more than a restaurant would, even if the restaurant was willing to risk it. These rumors are ignorant , racist & mean.
