Just out of curiosity why do you think that the wars bankrupted America? US military spending is only a small fraction of federal spending. The wars barely increased this spending by a few percent of the total budget. How can you blame the economic collapse on a minority of Federal spending? If the US goes bankrupt it is going to be social security, medicare, medicaid, assorted other welfare spending, and these stupid bailouts. Or maybe the global warming hysteria. According to this White House document, the U.S. military budget for the fiscal year 2003 was $379 billion, an increase of roughly $48 billion from the year before. This budget represents roughly 18% of the federal budget, and 53% of the total discretionary money controlled by the Congress and the Administration. The increase alone was larger than the annual military budget of any other country. From the $379 billion figure, the worldwide list drops precipitously to $34.8 billion for the United Kingdom, $29 billion for Russia, $27 billion for France, and $23.1 billion for Germany. Next year, the budget is expected to increase to roughly $400 billion This is what is on the books dont forget the black projects or other foreign aid, like the ten million we give to Israel every day while our own people go without. I think eliminating social security would be great. I'd rather not give money I'll never see again as it'll be bankrupt long before I retire. Medicaid is a waste as well in all but those cases that need it: children and the incapable. otherwise, get a job at target, they offer medical. just about any corporate job does. just because you have less is not a reason for me to give you more. The 'job' of the Federal government was intended to perform those duties that the free market is incapable of doing and are too large a scale for states to do. So basically, military should by far be the largest budget item. Social security is a wasteful program that nobody of my generation will ever see, even after dumping tens of thousands into it. we give more federal funds for 'infrastructure' and state projects than we do anything else. Cut the pork, cut the social programs and you're easily in the black. apparently you missed the part where the military stays around. so what? because I believe in personal responsibility? If you can help yourself and instead would rather sit back in your poverty getting just enough from the government to get by, I think you deserve to starve in the streets. Judge me for it. Ask me if I care. and who do you think runs your socialist little world. or did you not take history? We also have psychos that think we should give up all war. There's nuts on both sides of the fence. and it didn't happen in 8 years... I've tried explaining the whole thing - you just refuse to listen. and once more: not bush's fault. |

Bush is a coward who sends Americans to die for a lie.
He sends men to do what he himself was unwilling to do. He's a coward! |

Bush is a coward who sends Americans to die for a lie. He sends men to do what he himself was unwilling to do. He's a coward! I can defend the war. there's a post around here somewhere. there's a lot of people that enjoy the freedoms of this nation that do not go to war. in fact, the vast majority. does that make them cowards as well? |

You cant defend anything. Hell-fire, you were only 17 when this Bush-whack began. Not even old enough to vote. Sit down and be thankful I wasnt President. Id have drafted your arse first! |

All these people talk about sacrifice when only a few actually are.
The rest sit around and leach off a society they have no interest in serving or sacrificing for. Even though they are of the perfect age to do so! |

They didn't cite it because most would not support it but that reason alone justifies military action in Iraq. So please, argue how he did not and I'll congratulate you and shut up about it. It's so easy to blame the one on the top. Doing so does nothing but display your own ignorance of the workings of our country. |

Chickenhawk n. A person enthusiastic about war, provided someone else fights it; particularly when that enthusiasm is undimmed by personal experience with war; most emphatically when that lack of experience came in spite of ample opportunity in that person’s youth.

No. Not for reasons he stated but it was necessary eventually. Doing both at once was the bad call. No. I don't want to. I have a life's plan and the military would simply have set that back 4 more years. I'd really rather not wait until my mid 30s to have a master's. That's the beauty of a volunteer military. one last question for you: Obama has never served. He is going to ask the same things of our men and women in uniform. Does that make him a coward and chickenhawk, as madison puts it? |

I think there is a significant difference between Obama and Bush or Cheney. See below to illustrate my point.
Democrats: Joe Biden: None. Rejected for medical reasons, but would have been eligible in a national emergency. Hillary Clinton: None. Chris Dodd: Army Reserve (1969-75). (But if "flying planes at home doesn't count for President Bush, then neither does this....) John Edwards: None. Draft number was never called. Dennis Kucinich: None. Was rejected for military service because of a heart murmur. Barack Obama: None. Too young to have been drafted for the Vietnam War. Bill Richardson: None. Received student and medical classifications. Draft number was never called. ~~~~~ Republicans: Rudy Giuliani: None. Received student and occupational deferments. Draft number was never called. Mike Huckabee: None. Came of age as draft was ending. Duncan Hunter: Served as an Army paratrooper and Ranger in Vietnam (1969-71). John McCain: Served in the Navy (1958-81); prisoner of war in Vietnam (1967-73). Mitt Romney: None. Received a deferment as a Mormon missionary in France. Was eligible for the draft upon his return to the states but was never selected. |
