Topic: What makes a mechanic? | |

I was noting how quickly the Ford/Chevy thread went to childish insults and it got me thinking about mechanical knowledge vs. hearsay.
Are you a mechanic? What makes a mechanic to you? How did you choose the car that you drive today? |

Yes I am a mechanic, and the actual word for it is Automotive Technician. The only difference is that the word technician implies that you actually know what you are doing. And I didn't choose the car I drive today, somebody owed me a lot of money...

How did you choose the car that you drive today? I agree with you...thats why i backed out for the most part. Like you stated..its all about preference....and who has the deepest wallet, lol. I think you have to actaully work on cars and not just read the magazines. And not just once or twice. Either for a living or on your own vehicles or projects. |

the ford/chevy thread is similar to a vanilla/chocolate thread. Now i am assuming that you are saddened by fact that it went the direction that it did. Yet to simply leave mechanics as the sole solid voices in this does not make sense, the automotive engineers should be involved too....
I would say that tech 2 qualifies as a mechanic, granted i have to achieved the highest status, this is common in a multitude of professions mechanic to me - enough skills for shop to hire you |

I have rebuilt a couple of vehicles and know my way
around. I'll do my own work if it is convenient. I selected my current cars for their practicality, reliability and efficiency and because they are easy to work on and were sold at a bargain price. Not that I wouldn't have a just for fun car - but it has not been a priority recently. |
