Just remember to bring water shoes if you plan on swimming at the beach. I stepped on a sea urchin there once.
You'll also need suntan lotion, because an hour out in the sun here is like 20-30 minutes there, though now that the seasons are changing it might be a LITTLE better. I can't tell you about safety there, I was there over 12 years ago, however I can tell you that fresh sugar cane, mangos and what they call Limoncillo (aka Mimoncillo) should not be missed. |

I've only ever been to D.R. and that was with friends who owned a house there (and could translate for me).
I did enjoy the Teleferico (sky car) in or near Puerta Plata. Bring money, there is a gift shop at the top, and they charge tourists more (not much more) than residents to ride, but the view is amazing! |

And Im not sure of the vibe there......sooooooo if anyone has been let me know!!! i've been to both punta cana had absolutely gorgeous beaches and seemed to be geared towards families puerta plata wasn't nearly as pretty (the sand was dark and hard) but it was more of a hot spot of single party animals and less couples/families |

Depends on where you stay. If you are full time in the hotel you are safe. Besides, it is boring, man. And pretty expensive I think.

There is no such thing as night life in the DR and the risk to catch AIDS is very high.

Dominican Republic is very interesting little island. The hotels in Puerto Plata are very nice with 24 hour buffet, shows, breathtaking beaches, and very friendly services.
Now if you go inside the island like towards Santiago or Santo Domingo then you will see how the people actually live. The roads have huge craters in them to where you have to drive around them, no one actually uses the few streets lights that do work, there is everywhere people trying to sell something, and the sounds of honking horns can get to you. Electricty goes out at 7pm unless you have a generator, and trash is picked up once a week and in some other parts every two weeks. This was in Santiago by the way. I lived there for 6 months. It was very interesting and if you like to dance Merengae or Salsa then Dominican's can surely show you how it is done. I wouldn't go alone to Santiago or Santo Domingo or any other towns. Puerto Plata or any major tourist coast town that the agency brochures offer is safe if you stay in the hotel juristication. You can go and play tennis, scuba diving, or swimming, or watch the many traditional Dominican shows if you like. I hope this helps and have fun over there if you choose to go. |

Tip: Play a round of stickball with the locals.
They will love you for it. |

Puerto Plata is the best place to go if you like night life. Sosua is only 5 minutes from the airport. There are many discos there. For single men, it is easy to find a partner for the evening. Stay at an all inclusive resort if you like secluded beaches. I would also try the many excursions they offer. For history buffs, do not miss Santo Domingo. Go the the Colonial area. See the Columbus cross. Enjoy the many different regions in the country. You can even go whale watching in Samana.

I like Puerto Plata DR! I stay at the Gran Ventana.
http://www.granventanahotel.com/ I love dinner in Sosua at Giorgio's on the bay cliff. The sunsets are wonderful there. Check it out, I think you will like it. Doug |
