I own Heelers and have had a pup chew or knock over many things over the years. I thought other dog owners might find this interesting.

What's the most expensive or interesting item your dog has chewed, swallowed or destroyed?

The Cost of Man's Best Friend

Man’s best friend can turn into our worst enemy when they wreak havoc around the house.

And the cost to owners of their dog’s destructive tendencies adds up to hundreds of pounds over the pet’s lifetime, a study has found.

Unsurprisingly, it is the somewhat ungainly great dane, which can grow to more than 42 inches tall, that is the worst culprit. The breed causes £669 of damage in its lifetime on average.

One of these gentle giants even ran through a set of patio doors, knocking the frame out of the wall, according to the owners.

But size does not always determine destructive power. The tiny chihuahua, at most nine inches tall, comes second as the nation’s most destructive dog, trumping even the rottweiler and the mastiff. The chihuahua chomps, chews and creates havoc to the tune of £638 in a lifetime.

The mastiff came third, costing owners £585, basset hounds were close behind at £564, and the whippet also made the top five with £518. Other dogs featuring high on the list were English setters, bulldogs, dachshunds and boxers.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure pet insurance, which carried out the research among 3,000 dog owners, said: “It’s not surprising the great dane is number one. What’s more surprising is the chihuahua in second place – it’s amazing that the smallest of the toy breeds can cause so much havoc.”

Oh, Lordy me...I could honestly put three kids thru Harvard law school with my laundry list of "destructibles gone to the dogs" over the years (clothing, jewelry, shoes, furniture, appliances, walls/doors, you name it, etc.).

Just suffice it to say what I cried the most over was...

...a freshly purchased pack of Double Stuffed Oreo Cookies! GONE...in 2.5 minutes FLAT after being put on the kitchen table before being properly put away!
