I just talked to a friend of mine that is getting married in October. So far his wedding has cost over 15,000 dollars. Now before you say "if he has it let him spend it" He don't have it! Both of their parents can't afford a wedding so he's paying for everything. He has taken out a loan against his 401K and used up his all of his savings. I think it's rediculous but I also understand it's a special day for the bride. It's not going to be so special when they spend their first 10 years trying to get out of debt from this wedding. I told him he had better call the hotel in the Bahamas (honeymoon) and see if there is a microwave in the room so he can smuggle over some hot-pockets. What does an average wedding cost?

A marriage license is $40 where I live. I am not at all about the day, I'm about the life I'd have with my spouse. I'd be cool with that, plus maybe a new outfit and some chocolate cake (ohhh I love cake). Total, $150, $200? Then I'd want to take a trip, at least a long weekend. Something with limited golf availability!

My first wedding was very small, it cost about $1500. Family only, local... no frills.

If I married again, I'd so want to do it in Vegas or on a ship. But if he insisted on a ceremony, $5k would be my max. Any more and it's just overkill. JMO.

They say the thing couple fight most about is finances.... why get into debt and create huge barriers before the marriage begins?

Mine was under $1000 and was beautiful......I had my dress made for $150.....by a local lady. The flowers, cake etc and preacher were about $450......the beach was free.......had the reception at the cabin on the beach......I bought the food and we prepared it the night before and I made all of the chocolates. Rented the tables/chairs/cutlery.......

I'll trade my dubz in for the perfect wedding,

why pay for a wedding when you can live together for free...and save the cost of a divorce if you both decide to go your separate ways...makes no sense to me...

My wedding cost about $3000. It was about 100 people with a DJ and bar at a country club.

$15k is pretty cheap. I think average here in AZ is $30k

My sisters wedding was about $1000.00 with about 50 guests.
Next Valentines day will be 23 years that she's been married to a great guy.

My wedding was over $5000.00.
Now I'm here hoping someone will feel sorry for me and take me in.

It's crazy to go into debt for a show off wedding. Request your friends talents in lieu of gifts. I had a friend get married a few years ago, I & another friend did all the food. The groom bought the meat, we bought all the rest of the food, prepared & served it. It cost us 60.00 a piece, that was our gift. we had people requesting our business card they thoght we were professional caterers! Another friend did the cake (she is a professional specialty cake baker) & the groom's sister in law did the flowers. It was very nice & didn't start the newlyweds off in debt.
