Should Pot be legal? Well, if you just want my opinion, I'll say yes. If you are looking for an absolute truth, I'll still say yes. The banning of substances used for recreation by human beings is a spurious goal at best. It can't be done. People will always try to find ways to amuse themselves or alter their reality. We always have, and always will.
When the government removed prohibition on alcohol, the country as a whole was extactic, but even more, violent crime dropped by 75%. When a recreation is made illegal, all that is done is open up an avenue for more crime to occur in the society. Not to mention that you isolate and devalue the standing of the casual user. I'm not saying no one will ever become an addict of marijuana (just because it hasn't happened yet...), what I am saying is that when you put the stygma of "drug user" on a person, it's kind of hard to live down in a community. That person will be shunned, unable to secure a descent paying job, and left with what alternatives? Maybe crime? Maybe selling half of his stash to your junior high kid? Has anyone really thought of the effects of the criminalization? We all think of the effects of legalization, but what has already happened to our society? The notion of gateway drug is also unsupported. The reason the statistics in this case lie, is that alcohol and cigarettes are not on the list. They don't ask "did you have alcohol or pot first." This scews the data, and therefor makes it inaccurate. Pot is no more a gateway drug than asprin. The truth is, the gateway concept is also a spurious arguement. Those statistics only really show that someone who is willing to break the law to try one recreational drug is willing to try more. The concept that if the drug was legal, it might not have the appeal of doing something "taboo" can also be taken into account. Don't give me any of this "what about the kids" cr@p either. Your kids have better access to illegal drugs than you do. What they don't have access too (outside of your own cabinets) is legal drugs. It isn't easy for a 14 year old to buy alcohol, but that same kid can buy pot, meth, crack, lsd, or heroin easier than you and I can get a prescription for codeine. Kids are smart too. What do you suppose happens when they find out those Partnership for a Drug free America commercials are outright lying to them? Probably the thought process goes like this "if they were exaggerating about that, what else were they lying about?" Decreased cost. Did it ever occur to anyone that the monetary cost of marijuana would actually go down if illegal? So you kid's won't be stealing as much from your purse if it's legal. That $50 they snag every week will drop to about $20, that's half a tank of gas you save! Not to mention, we can grow it here, so it doesn't have to be imported any more, that means JOBS!!! It has to be grown, harvested, processed, rolled, bagged, stamped and sold. And that doesn't even touch the industrial side. Factories would have to be constructed or reopened, manned, research would get additional funding, and not just to find the negative effects. (I won't touch the estimated 12 billion the government would save by not enforcing draconion laws) I don't know if I can see the day when there is a bodeaga next to every liquor store, but the one stop weekend shopping would be cool. |

Yes I think it should be legalized. I can not see the difference in allowing alcohol and not allowing pot. To me pot is a lot better then beer. I mean how many stoners do you see starting fights, or being loud or anything? Pot too much of a calming drug to have that effect. How many people die while drinking and driving? Take it out of the dealers hand put it in the hands of the government and free up some jail space! to be honest this is very true iv seen alot over my years on this earth so ya pot would be better than drinking |

I'm not talking about any other drug, just pot. Should we legalize it? For the record I do not smoke it but I have many friends that do. My vote....yes I'll second that. |

A couple of points that blow my mind.....
Pot is the only commodity that I know of that is cheaper now than it was 10 years ago and gets cheaper all the time. ($40 an oz.) Used to be $100 an oz. Secondly, Salvia is evil and wicked sh*t! Like nasty tripping on bad acid with tooo much strychnine.....eeewwwww.....How it isn't illegal completely escapes me!?!?!?!?!?! |

No No No Not everyone is effected the same way when they smoke ! It can make some violent ! Unless your going to screen everyone to see who has a good reaction I say NOOOO ! You actually know a violent stoner? Yes ... my brother started when he was 13 smoking pot and it was hell growing up with him . It still has the same effect on him now and has nearly cost him his wife and son several times . |

I'm not sure why some people can't get it through there thick heads that not everyone is effected the same way .... what is good for one is not good for another . I have seen so many families torn apart by drug use and not only because it is illegal . Some become violent others become extremely lazy and no longer support anything other than there habits . My Step-Father was in a band with a guy who had smoked pot his entire life and he was impossible to carry on a conversation with . Personally I don't care to have a bunch of mindless zombie walking around me .

However do you know how millions of others are going to react ? When pot is legalized will it only be available to a select few who react in a positive manner ? Alcohol is already bad enough .... just because pot is the lesser of 2 evils it doesnot make it any less evil . Instead of using alcohol as an excuse to legalize pot why don't we outlaw alcohol aswell . Sounds like a plan to me ! |

Statistically occurs in less than 2% that they will have adverse effects from marijuana, less than 1% get addiction (currently unavailable given data at the time I think was 2003). A lot of positive research has been done on marijuana in the UK and Canada, and I believe Sweden. The problem is stories that get carried over and over-dramatized (not saying this is the case here), usually starting with "they were drunk and hit me" carried from 10 people over it turns into "they were stoned and put me in the hospital" because a drug is a better patsy then alcohol because one is socially acceptable while the other turns you into a martyr. |
