Topic: When an engagement is called off | |

who keeps the engagement ring? and have you ever canceled an engagement and if so who got the ring?

Etiquette dictates that the ring should be returned unless the gentleman insists the lady keep it.

If the girl calls it off she returns the ring, if the guy calls it off she keeps the ring. I read that in Women's Day.

I did and I gave the ring back, but then I did it again but he let me keep the ring.

I was engaged very young and had no business being engaged, but I called it off and returned the ring.
I feel that the ring should be returned, b/c to me an engagement ring is accompanied by an offer of marriage. If that offer is withdrew, then the ring should be returned. |

When my fiance died I hung onto the ring for about a year. But when his brother asked me to help him find a ring like mine only smaller and more affordable...I thought on it for a week and then gave it to him for his fiance. I like to think it would have greater meaning kept in the family than left on my nightstand as an excuse to keep mourning. It was very hard, but I'm really glad I did it in the end.
I took an engagement ring again, three years later, but returned it within a week when I realized I was in love with the idea of having a family more than I was in love with the man. You cannot marry someone just because you get along swimmingly and hope that's enough. |

By law, the ring is to be returned unless it was given on a Holiday, such as Valentines, Christmas or a birthday.

Funny this topic came up. Was in a salon yesterday and just happened to pick up a magazine...found an article talking about 'what to do with the ring or jewelry from relationships gone bad'...think I'll look into it! ...I'm getting ready to move, I could use the extra cash!!! oops...meant to share...here it is! exboyfriendjewelry.com |

Legally, Say the man bought the ring, If he calls it off, she keeps it. If she calls it off, he gets his ring back. Does a divorce count as calling it off? lol

actually it is a contract at least thats how judge judy put it... lol... basically the way i understand it is he's giving you this ring in the terms that you will marry him, if the contract is broke no marriage occurs the ring is returned. unless he wants you to keep it.
