i'm sorry but no alot of african-americans don't IDENTIFY with mlk....they just have to find as many black people as possible to put on a pedistal to feel like they aren't being taken over by the white man and the government isn't gonna risk more lawsuites on that so they give them what they want....they don't identify with him because most of the black people especially here in the south are more raciest against white then we've ever been against them....they use the defacs system for everything they can because they think we owe them something for our ancesters having slaves during the civil war...hell half of them can't even name their relatives that were slaves but they're so quick to use them as an excuse to have 10 kids and sit on their ass and milk the system for all it's worth while the rest of america has to work their ass off to pay for it....mlk didn't stand for that...he wanted equal rights, how do we have equal rights if only minorities get federal aid for living assistance and medical and don't tell me it doesn't work that way because i've been there and seen that first hand....i've been a single mother since i was 17 and had to work 2 jobs most of the time because the only assistance i could get was $60 a month in food stamps but i've seen people that were black or had mixed babies that got everything defacs has to offer and yet they ride around in brand new cars wearing name brand clothes...so yes it's all about racial issues and it will always be a big deal to the black community when a white man wants to get rid of a holiday about a black man.

I'm sorry about your hardships, but hatred toward African-Americans won't help you.

I don't doubt there are some that might exploit the system, but not all of them do.

Heck, there are Caucasians that exploit the system, too, and you could say the exact same things about them.

When you make blanket statements like that, it feeds into racial stereotypes.

By painting African-Americans with the same broad brush, some people might think that they are all that way, so it mischaracterizes those that aren't.

No wonder they think a lot of us are racist.embarassed

first of all i don't have racial hatred toward blacks....i have a hatred for people who think the world owe them something because of their race...that is a major problem in the south and if you ask any white person down here they will tell you the same thing...there is more reverse racism then anything here and that isn't identifying with what mlk stood for...i do agree he was a great man for what he believed in but we don't have that in our country...maybe it would be different if he was still alive but alot of people want that holiday for the wrong reasons and are agree at mccain for the wrong reasons about it....mlk planted an idea but that's it...it isn't enough to make a damn holiday for it but for the simple fact that he was black they want a day just for him...that was my point

Since I'm not African-American, I don't think I can say how they all feel.

But, yes, Bill Cosby has been critical of the way some African-Americans behave.

Of course, Bill Cosby is sitting in a pretty comfortable position, so he can afford to.

It's easy to preach and tell people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, but they have to have boots first.

A lot of welfare is institutionalized and cross-generational, so until that system gets reformed, you will see more of what mandy described.

Hatred is such a negative energy/emotion to carry around regardless of the reason. (JMO)now to continue and say ask any white person is soo wrongggggggggg in my eyes, sounds so bigotted and such an assumption.. that I remain amazed...

granted everyone has the right to feel anywhich way they so feel - but to try and take others down with you is cowardly (in my eyes/JMO)

Mirror - So what is your point other than to incite racial bashing and hatred between white citizens and black citizens of the USA?

WHAT did you set out to accomplish with this thread? What is your MOTIVE? WELL????

I was against MLK day, all I could rember about him is his one speech and the phrase "I Have a Dream" (well so do other people have dreams of peace and equality), and the fact that he was an adulterer. So, shall the bashing against me begin now?????????????????????????????????

OH, and let us NOT forget my IRISH heritage, the good old "IRISH NEED NOT APPLY" hatred against MY IRISH family.

One, two, three, everyone start bashing Lindyy!

No one should bash MsLindyy - she like the rest of us is entitled to what she believes.

"Mirror - So what is your point other than to incite racial bashing and hatred between white citizens and black citizens of the USA?"

Hatred of any type is not positive, I truly dont think he wanted to incite a racial bash, I think that those that have been taught/trained or firmly believe it's a color/race issue bring it up themselves.

People turn of the lights, lose power, lose your electricity, we are all human... see past the color barriers that are up, see the humanity in all.

I opine that since Mandy lives in the South that she is far more qualified to speak on this subject than anyone else on this post. Not saying no one else has a right to their opinion (which I sometimes get the feeling), but Mandy certainly lives right smack in the face terrority of where MLK's beginnings come from.

mandy this was defending you mandy reread it i said more discriminating than anything you said

and yes that is the way i have seen it i have been in the south a lot and any major black population has this issue

just as any major white area has a white extremest issue

it just is and fact is fact

it is not discrimination if it is fact

granted the word all or any are out of line but over all the basic fact is correct

Mandy as you can tell I am just about as vocal as the next person sometimes much more.. (ok I gotta a big mouth, but I'm respectful ))

I happen to love Atlanta and have never once felt or had that impression, maybe those people knew I was heading up and hid (joking trying to make subj lighter).

My problem is when people express their opinions/beliefs/views and want to include others in order to make a point.

Not everyone feels as you, as I, as the mailman feels, so yes, I said to take that route is cowardly, group masses together in false hope of security/righteousness in numbers.

Well, she lives and breathes the everyday life there. She should know better than one who does not live there.

And, I think Mandy used "all" as a generic in general manner. I am sure she did not mean everyone in the world. EX: I was at a get-together of friends, racially mixed. Arguing started between 1 white and 1 black. I said "I wish you 'people' would grow up." Well low and behold, the black 'friend' said why are you referring to us (meaning the black) to as 'people', she (the white girl) was in on it too. Good grief. When I said 'people' I meant both of them. ohwell

Just trying to point out how words are used generically, with nothing negative being meant.

Stand my ground due to my personal experiences.

Doesn't add nor take away from anyone's opinion, nor does it make me want to veer from my views.

Location is only geography.

I try and steer clear of the 'what if's' and trying to decipher what people mean/meant/should/should not say. Much like assumptions
