Topic: Punctuation Pet Peeves | |

Folks -
Am I missing something here? This seems like a very reasonable topic. I'm not sure why people are getting upset here. This is such a common mistake, I can't imagine that this is singling one user out. But if I'm wrong, please message me privately. Either way, everyone on this topic needs to calm down... |

Lion I agree with you. This is a forum. People should feel free to post
they want to talk. Not everything needs to be about Punctuation or proper grammar. I type the way I talk. That is how I feel comfortable about it. I am not hear to graded or anything I am here to have fun and not have to worry about little things. |

The only one who could tell you whether or not you are wrong is me, as I'm the one who created the thread and know my reasons for so doing. And I've already explained that in subsequent posts, so no need to email you to tell you about it. I appreciate your comments; thank you. |

Hummm, well I will have to admit myself that I do not see anything wrong
with this post either. I know that I'm not the best when I'm typing on getting the punctiuation correct. And hell on the run on sentences too. But I do try and get them corret as well as spelling. Not till I went to college in my thirty's did I finally started to get my spelling down for I'm real bad at spelling. But when I read others words I do not ever correct them. But will admit some are soooo bad that I can not understand what they are trying to get across as there point for the spelling is so bad but now I would not tell them out right. lol Hummm but my pet peeves go when someone lies to you ohhhh now talking about grrrrrrrrrrr that sets me off quick lol or playing dumb God gave you a brain use it for gawds sake lol. Now I did have a friend correct me on the words won't and want ohhhh he would get me soo bad for using the wrong one and I try so har to get the right one when I say I want something lol. Actually good topic and it does help when your writing a letter to get your punctuation correct you would not believe how well you can get a point across if your spelling is correct makes a world of differnce. |

My pet punctuation peeve is "emoticons". The other would be extra-lazy
capitlization be it all lower case, or all upper case. C'mon people there were four-hundred years of european warfare over the dominance of the Greeco-Roman "upper-case" vs the northern rebellious miniscule. People died for your right to use either case, so, please, out of respect, use the right case. Dont let western civilization die like the Roman Empire who refused to get out of that Upper-Case mentality. Do it for the children! |

Improper use of prepositions. A preposition is a bad thing to end a
sentence with. |
|
|

The "z's" have it. Sayz ne whoz dis idiotz?!?!?!
What the hell?!?! Is that suppose to be a ciphered message or something? |

There is nothing wrong with ending a sentence with a preposition
================================================================ The often heard but misleading “rule” that a sentence should not end with a preposition is transferred from Latin, where it is an accurate description of practice. But English grammar is different from Latin grammar, and the rule does not fit English. In speech, the final preposition is normal and idiomatic, especially in questions: What are we waiting for? Where did he come from? You didn't tell me which floor you worked on. In writing, the problem of placing the preposition arises most when a sentence ends with a relative clause in which the relative pronoun (that; whom; which; whomever; whichever; whomsoever) is the object of a preposition. In edited writing, especially more formal writing, when a pronoun other than that introduces a final relative clause, the preposition usually precedes its object: He abandoned the project to which he had devoted his whole life. I finally telephoned the representative with whom I had been corresponding. If the pronoun is that, which cannot be preceded by a preposition, or if the pronoun is omitted, then the preposition must occur at the end: The librarian found the books that the child had scribbled in. There is the woman he spoke of. |

sheila, i have to agree...many things bug the heck out of me in printed
form. i can't stand run-on paragraphs, lol...the ones that should have been broken into four or five easy to manage ones, but instead go on and on for days. i don't like dangling participles, or quotation marks used for apostrophes...or incorrect usage of possessives. incorrect spellings make my teeth ache. being in the online world, i try to get past such things, and i always try to remember that there might be a valid reason BEHIND such errors. |
