I just bought my first guitar today. It's a cheap one, the Lyon by Washburn. I saw it and figured it would be good enough to learn on. It came with three picks, extra strings, and a learning DVD and automatic tuner.
I've been looking at some tutorials online also. Anyone here play guitar? Have any tips/advice for beignners? I love it so far. I bought a keyboard with a starter/beginner kit a few years ago, but never really touched it after playing with it for about an hour. I've been playing with my guitar for hours. I had to put it away because I live in an apartment and I'm not sure if the neighbors could hear it or not, but I can't wait to play with it tomorrow while reading the tutorials, hopefully I'll learn how to play. It seems pretty easy so far. |

The best tip is to keep playing a lot, and don't give up.

Lots of practice and if you have someone nearby that can help the DVD's are great but one on one helps with the finger placement a whole lot more

The first rule of playing guitar is-
ALWAYS make sure you're in tune! It's like Leslie West of Mountain once said... "If you can't play in tune, you suck!" Other than that, start reading guitar mags, like Guitar World and Guitar DVD. They've got tons of pretty good exercises and stuff you can use to get your chops up. In fact (if you look carefully enough) you might still be able to find their "speed issue", where they showcase all the really fast players- that issue alone has got some serious finger exercises. Of course, the GW people also put out their annual Guitar Buyer's Guide, too- beside new equipment and stuff, they also have a number of Playboy and Penthouse centerfolds modeling the stuff, too. They aren't nude (it ain't that kind of mag), but they ARE scantily-dressed. |

Yeah I haven't tuned it yet, the tuner that came with it needs a triple A battery, and I don't have any yet, I'm going to get some tomorrow though, so I can tune it. |
