Hi, found this:

"This proverb indeed refers to the practice of gauging a horse's age by the condition of its teeth. The proverb warns against questioning the value of something received by luck or chance."

As someone who has always enjoyed the serendipidy of life and the unexpected or gifts of questionable value I've been lucky enough to receive, I've learned not to look at the 'horse's teeth'. Too many of those gifts have proved to be just what I needed at the time! It is far better to look instead at the intent of the giver and enjoy what has been offered in that sentiment.
