The Tortured Law on Torture
Posted on May 13, 2008 By Robert Scheer Ah, yes, those torture confessions have proved so useful. That, at least, was the claim of our president in justifying one of the most egregious assaults ever on this nation’s commitment to the rule of law. But now comes news that charges have been dropped against the so-called Sept. 11 attacks’ 20th hijacker, one of dozens so identified, because the “evidence” he supplied under torture and later recanted is not credible enough to go to trial. That fact, of course, will not compel President Bush to cut the tortured prisoner loose. After all, Saudi citizen Mohammed al-Qahtani has only been held in confinement for more than six years without being charged with a crime, and without being allowed to confront his accusers in a court of law. The fact that the information produced is worthless—as evidenced by Qahtani, once driven insane, naming everyone around him in the camp as a major al-Qaida operative—will not deter those who condone torture............................. http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/20080513_the_tortured_law_on_torture/ Unbelievable that we allow this |

patriot act 2001 gives that power not only to non citizens but also to those that are a citizen as well
lots of little civil rights violations in the patriot act |

American exceptionalism (the idea that our government doesnt have to follow standards of humanity like the geneva convention because it helped create them) is a terrible thing

Are you a dem Dragoness or just hate bush?

Are you a dem Dragoness or just hate bush? so the fact that someone points out a problem in the government (an inhumane torture policy no less) automatically polarizes them as a dem or bush hater? The issue of torture should not divided along party line but like everything else it is |

Are you a dem Dragoness or just hate bush? Im an Independent who voted for Bush the first time. I have lived to regret that vote, and yes, I hate him, what he has done to America, and our reputation around the world. Now, dont just ask a question answer one. What good has Bush done for this country? Please dont say he gave me a rebate check...... |

The issue of torture should not divided along party line but like everything else it is No, I think the fact that you tends to blame Bush for a lot of things puts her in the category of a Bush hater. She also has, what would seem to be, liberal views that would classify her as a democrat. |

Wait what am I laughing about? Me either I got a rebate check but I still hate Bush... Does that make me a hypocrite?? lol No, just because you give me money doesn't mean I have to like you. Now if you're gonna pay me to like you, that's a different story. I can fake that pretty good but only if the pay is good enough!! |

Is there a chance that information that was obtained is being kept away from the media, so our enemies are in the dark about our knowledge? |

Tell me Fanta. Have you met the man?

Some people never learn from history. People under torture with eventually say anything, agree with anything, say what the torturers want them to say. I don't trust evidence gotten by torture. Especially when tortures are giving them the information. Tortures are trying to get them to verify and coroborate things they already have bits of evidence on. Therefore it stands to reason that they will be able to guess at bits and pieces that might also be true because they are coming from the same backgrounds and culture groups.

Tell me Fanta. Have you met the man? No, What does that have to do with it??? Have you? I mean really met him? Not just attend a function where he was, or shake his hand, but really met him away from the pomp and stance of a public appearance. |
