Sun on the horizon soft,
breeze whispers in my ear.
With the day now lost, comes the evenings cost
when no lovers voice I hear.

Every noise rings louder now,
mocks the silence of the dark.
its reckless way, keeps sleep at bay
til dawn enters with the lark.

I cry, “What toll will you demand
of me, to make this madness cease;
to still this raging noise at last
and let me sleep in peace?”

“No price” it taunts, “no pound of flesh,
no coin or service rendered.
The only way to banish me
is simply to surrender.”

The toll too high, the price too steep,
I sigh and lay my head down
I cannot pay what I do not own
so into the gloom I drown.

Eyes blink open, clean breath drawn
Pale light outlines my shades
One more evening’s met its end;
the toll yet left unpaid.

The lark now sings her chipper tune
of an evening come to pass. I ask,
"Won’t you come back at the glooming
with some song to make light last?”
