why so rough on newies?

I wouldn't call it "rough," exactly....

But every now and then, someone new shows up, who doesn't really
understand the purpose and tone of JSH. They may think this is some
kind of sex site, they may make rude or inappropriate suggestions or
comments, they may offend people.

Kojack's advice post is intended to instruct the new people on how to
avoid those kinds of situations. It really makes sense, if you think
about it: the newbies are given some guidelines, a framework which
(hopefully) allows them to understand some of the parameters of what is
and is not acceptable here. And, at the same time, it also keeps the
site more free from the kinds of posts nobody wants here in the first
place, which makes things more comfortable for the people who have been
here longer.

I see it as a win-win situation. Everybody should read Kojack's advice
before they start posting!
