Husband who is stae's away from me, said he hired a lawyer. I don't have one. Can't afford it. I contacted this lawyer to ask if husband actually retained him. I recieved an email back saying he couldn't answer as to yes or no due to confidentiality. How can I find out if my husband hired this guy or not?

Have you been served with any papers? If so, it'll say on there. But, no he can't talk to you in any capacity, it would be a conflict of interest.

THE ONLY WAY YOU COULD AND EVENTUALLY WILL FIND OUT IS WHENEVER THE LAWYER SERVES YOU PAPER!

the only way is to wait and see if you receive anything. I don't know about where you live but there might be a program to help with a lawyer.

tell your husband that he needs to sign papers saying the lawyer can talk to you...however...be EXTREAMLY careful, as he is your husbands lawyer and not yours..... he was hired for his interest not yours....

How long should it take forme to recieve paper's?

til he pays the lawyer... and read them through well, take them to your local college if you can't afford a lawyer... their law school usually has something set up...if you don't like what it says, DON'T sign it.... make your revisions and send it back with no signature.....

I could not agree more!!!! DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING if you don't like what it says or are unsure of what it says. Ask for help!

lol you can go to the court house and see if "hes started papers" everything has to be filed and dont worry you can defend yourself the court officers and judges will help you ask anyone in the filing area they will help you file the right papers

Do you share a house & kids? Usually you can get an arbitrator and it's much less expensive, much more relaxed, get to hash it out like grown ups are supposed to.
If there's no property or child care issue, should be pretty simple.
ALSO, if you have a court house near you, they usually have a library with divorce & family stuff, but since it varies from state to state, your library may not have what you need.
If you really don't have the income, look in your phone book and on your city website, as often, they have free law advice for those who qualify.
