It may work, if you both are willing to work hard and respect each other. My personal experience: I dated this guy for over 3 years and then I moved away. The LDR lasted only 1 month, and the bond was supposedly "very" strong. For those that are deciding whether or not to keep the relationship, make sure you are willing to put up with hours of sitting infront of the computer- make sure your partner respects you. On a honest note: LDRs are very helpful to get rid of the guy/girl that doesn't truly love you!
