I've only been on this site for a short while, but I've seen a lot of men's profiles where they describe themselves as being very "laid back". What exactly does that mean, guys? Even-tempered, or just apathetic? Not easily excited, or just not motivated? Does it vary from guy to guy, or do guys already have a set impression of the term and how it applies that leaves women (like me) wondering? Also, I've seen some that say they're looking for a "laid-back" girl...I'm almost afraid what that means with respect to a woman. 
"Laid back" is one of those profile cliches that is only there because it's in everybody else's profile. Usually, it's partnered with "easy-going," as in "I'm laid back and easy going," which is profilese for "I can't think of anything relevant to write so I'll just use what everyone else says in THEIR profiles," thereby perpetuating the practice. In the end, it's just laziness. If you think about it, there's really no need to write "I'm laid back and easy going," because no one ever says "I'm frantic and prone to sporadic outbursts of violence." Much like "I'm a fun person who likes to have fun," the appearance of "I'm laid back and easy going" is an indicator of someone simply lacking the mental apparatus to say anything creative or original. Now, there's an answer. Spoken like one who knows...

It is almost a knee-jerk response to say yes. And that is what my answer is, but with a qualification...
Because I'm not rich and my own resources are limited already, they would have to be making a sincere effort to get back up on their feet, to becoming responsible once again for their own well-being. If that seemed to be taking too long, or at least long enough to begin taxing my ability to help them, I'd have to consider looking into other resources for them. I hope that doesn't sound harsh, but I only say it because I've been in this situation, and it wasn't with just a friend, it was a close family member. Helping her almost cost me my own home and my ability to provide for my children, who were still at home at the time. Sometimes, the desire to help isn't enough when the ones who need the help don't even want to help themselves. |
