Jesus said that because he was fulfilling prophecy. If you look at Psalm 22, which was a prophecy of the death of Jesus, it starts off with "My God, My God, Why have you Forsaken me?" Jesus stated that at the end of his life because he was showing that he fulfilled prophecy. He was not becoming weak as people think. His disciples knew this prophecy of David, and so they knew that it was being fulfilled.
