The general formula for reading the bible is, to start in the book of John, read that, it will give you a knowledge of Jesus in the easiest to understand book, then you can move onto the book of Acts, Chorinthians, and the rest of the old testament, THEN you move onto the old testament, genesis and exodus being two of the more important. Try out 1&2nd Samuel and 1&2 kings for some interesting stories. Avoid Deutoronmy, and Levticius if you don't want to be bored with laws, book of numbers is all names, again you can avoid it.
