I think they can work. But BOTH need to be committed to each other and talk about what it take to meet.

In last 2013 I was talking again to a young lady who lives in Canada. She would has me if I though we would know how to do things ( like household work and everyday stuff) together. I told her we could if we learn how each person has his or her or system. Sadly this young lady AGAIN got with someone in her own town. ( Never-mind the fact I told her I was trying to find a job in HER country!!!!!! Want we have been talking on-line for a couple of year, not mere months.)

So I guess a relationship can would these days. It is just hard to come across a young lady who take it seriously.
