Monopolies are easy to bust...don't buy their products. Gas? Buy way less, carpool, mass transit. TV, get rid of it. Food? buy the no name brands. Monopolies don't scare me, unless it is a government monopoly. Then it is hard to circumvent.jmo

In these cases there is no monopoly. You can't select a substitute good in a monopolistic marketplace because there are none in that segment. Sure, a bike is a substitute good to a car or gas, but in reality, do you think even a few million less drivers would hinder and make a monopoly fall in the gasoline industry? All it would do is lower quantity (less output/jobs) and possibly increase price in order to maximize their profits.

monopolies in effect have to either destroy themselves or become obsolete (i.e. new technology replaces that which they have a monopoly on). They are in fact very difficult to take down.

So name a true monopoly in a free market system.

There are guys on here that have some 'rough edges'.

I might be one of them.

So... For the GentleWomen on here.

Can you accept some of the 'rough edges' out there?

Or do you try to change them.
bigsmile

If a man is aware of his rough edges, would he not want the softness of a woman to smooth him on occasion?

Not in public, but sure, smooth my roughness.

Monopolies are not good. Period. I hated the game as a kid. Monopolize your family and friends. Bad feelings usually ensued.

Same as real life...we like choices and options.jmo

 He just named off who was getting paid by the corporations and how much they getting:smile:

Did he show proof... In this naming?

Mr. Oberman... His only appearent qualification for the job is he hates everyone, is loud and obnoxious...

Him and Rachael Madow are the main reason I stopped including MSNBC on my round of News shows...

Way to slanted.

 Yes, every bit of it was true. These politicians have sold us out to the rich corporations:smile:

The Politicians wil soon replace the rich cooperations. jmo

Let the free market ride.

Some things I am liberal on, some things I am conservative on. I consider myself an independent thinker and voter.

Here's a more complete transcript of Obama's relevant statement at SEIU's New Leadership Health Care Forum on March 24, 2007 --

As I indicated before, I think that we're going to have to have some system where people can buy into a larger pool. Right now their pool typically is the employer, but there are other ways of doing it. I would like to -- I would hope that we could set up a system that allows those who can go through their employer to access a federal system or a state pool of some sort. But I don't think we're going to be able to eliminate employer coverage immediately. There's going to be potentially some transition process. I can envision a decade out or 15 years out or 20 years out where we've got a much more portable system. Employers still have the option of providing coverage, but many people may find that they get better coverage, or at least coverage that gives them more for health care dollars than they spend outside of their employer. And I think we've got to facilitate that and let individuals make that choice to transition out of employer coverage.

 He is talking about letting people keep their Health care even if they lose their job.

And who pays for an unemployed persons health care? The employed. Programs like National Health Care do not give people the incentive to get insurance...only the reason not to pay for it. "The state will pay for it" mentality.jmo

Crystal clear.....the plan, that is to eliminate private insurers.

Private insurance policies will not be able to compete with "National Health Care" . Small business owners will be pressured to join the National Health Care bandwagon.

National Health Care will not bring the best and brightest nurses or doctors to this field.jmo

No one can say that Govenment Health care will be better than what we have. But it will cost a lot more to make sure that the 47 million uninsured have insurance. Maybe many of the 47 million do not work, or are not legally here. jmo

Fix the problems, do not start over from scratch. Government run entities usually are a failure. On a 300 million people scenario.jmo

How about a leader that was maybe or maybe not born in America. How about a leader that made the cigar a sex toy. How about a leader that was illiterate. Presidents are human, wee just elect them like they are on American Idol.

I think our health care is the best in the world, but the insurance companies and lawyers have driven up the prices. Fix that, and keep the current system. My mom has been a nurse for 40 years and the doctor she works for is top notch. I don't think a national health care plan will attract the best and brightest doctors. People from all over the world come here for a wide variety of treatments. jmo

Of course there will be new taxes...hidden or not. Taxes always increase. How much of the price of a gallon of gas is fed/state/local tax? More than you know.

I see now the new fearmongering attempt coming from the Republicans is that if National Health care gets approved people will lose their health care. slaphead

Gotta love it!!!!

I'm not a Republican or a Democrat..but it seems premature for anyone to say what a complete overhaul of the health system will result in. Fear tactics by the Republicans, and Ignorance tactics by the Democrats. The sky is falling or don't worry, everything will be just fine.jmo

Good thread Modela,

I had my heart and tear glands removed at birth. But if I had a heart, I would protect it with all my strength.

It is still a semi-government organization and the government will not allow them to fail even if means they will have to throw billions of dollars at the problem just to prop them up. How many times have they raised rates and still hasn't brought them out of their free-fall. Raising rates is not working for them and it is not endearing them to their customers. They lack the efficiencies and cost controls of their fully private brethren and they do not have to answer directly to their customers. Frankly I and many other put more trust in private package carriers than the USPS.

Like cabot said they are taking drastic measures to break even.
they have been voted the most trusted agency in the country for years, that comes straight from the customers themselves.

I hate to see someone with such aingst towards the postal service, we try to provide the best serice we can. times are tough for most businesses in this country, why would you think the postal service is any different.

Actually I am not sure what people are talking about. What's wrong with the Postal Service? When I have used it I always found them pleasant and efficient. Am I missing something?

They have been running in the red for years. The volatile fuel prices as well as email have put a dent in the profit margin.
