withdrawing life support can simply mean stopping treatment, medication etc, which is a lot more frequent than turning off a life support machine. (like you see in the movies) Someone that has sensitive conscience cant do it. The very though that the patient will soon die as a result of "withdrawing medication" implies you helped him to die. I cant do that job for a million dollars!

Hi .... We call it euthanasia and It is illegal in my country for medical/nursing professionals to provide such care . . I believe it is legal in holland Thanks Blondey. But its the old man's will to die, it shouldn't be illegal anywhere I agree with you .. As a nurse I withdraw life support frequently .. Which could be seen as assisted death .. The difference is .. The prognosis is deemed to be unsurvivable and a matter of letting nature take its course by withholding medical intervention . Recently there was a legal case in nz where a lawyer dying of a brain tumour applied to the courts for assisted death ... Her request was denied .. I meet many elderly people living with severe medical conditions and disability with poor social supports that reduce their quality of life markedly . Then there are others who live in institutions with little control over their day to day life . Often Their life becomes a regime not of their choosing . For some life becomes a struggle .. unbearable and they reach a point where they lose the will to live ... Sad but true . I dont think I can do nursing work, they see a lot of horror 'films'. They got guts too. I have fear they may not be the best partner people like me who can not even kill a fowl would like to have in life. They can snuff life out of their partner if provoked. Lol!!!. I may most likely be wrong but thats my phobia. But their dressing, fast movement and red, blue, black and green pen, including the breast watch, white cloth, etc normally send me to the dream world. Secretly wishing I have one of them as wife.lol

He is currently the longest living man on earth but he wants death to remember him. He is crying daily, asking why death has forgotten him. My questions are; Is "mercy killing" appropriate in this circumstances? Is there any law against it? How old is too old to live on earth? When do you wish to die? Nice & Thought-Provoking post. I do not understand why this old man wants to die... life is a gift more of it you receive the more grateful you should be You don't know how it feels like seeing one's children and grandchildren buried while alive. Some might even accuse him of witchcraft and killing the kids to remain alive

Do you believe in mercy killing? Not unless it's already outlined in some kind of living will or something. Otherwise, I believe suicide is a personal choice no one should deny someone. So maybe a Mahashta Murasi Indian born in 1835 said what is quoted, but it wasn't when they were 179, and at best in the late 1950's. He is 179 years old and he is still alive!!.
