I'm looking to purchase an external harddrive any suggestions or opinions or comments on which kind/brand I should be looking at.
it will be mainly for pictures and videos.

I use a Seagate Free Agent Pro with 320 GB capacity. Works pretty good, and is quiet to boot. I don't like the way they designed the on/off switch, though- give it a chance, and you'll turn it on/off at the most inopportune time, which can be a bit embarrassing.

And Nero isn't an external drive- it's actually a suite of audio/video/DVD software. You can use some of the the software to create movies from video cameras and stuff.
