Abra Hey could you do me a favor and go to the tech. forum. I thought you might be able to explain the sound barrier to me thanks bud Miles I’m going out for dinner right now. I can give you a short explanation right here if the OP will forgive the hijack. Sound travels through air via air. It's just molecules bouncing against each other (pressure differentials in the gas). Those pressure differentials travel at a maximum speed due to the physics of molecules(i.e. due to their mass, etc.) So the speed is limited by the dynamics of the propagation of the these air pressure disturbances in the gas medium. The ‘sonic boom’ is caused when air molecules are separated quicker than that can naturally move on their own. Like when a plane flies through the air quicker than the air molecules could naturally move (faster than the speed of sound). What happens is that the plane creates a vacuum behind it and the air then “Claps” back together to give rise to a huge “BOOM”. This process is exactly the same thing that happens when lightening strikes. When a bolt of lightening shoots through the air is vaporizes all the air molecules (slightly different from what a plane does). But this then causes a vacuum to exist, and the air then “Claps” back together again to give rise to a huge “BOOM” that we hear after a lightening strike. So the ‘sonic boom’ from a supersonic jet is actually not all that different from the boom you hear when lightening strikes. It’s the same principle in both cases. It’s just waves of air clapping together that cause the booms. Hope that made sense. Me go eat now. |

Why is it that some people come in when someone is happy about what they believe, and try and make them feel less than or guilty about receiving?
I don’t think they mean to attack the happiness of the original poster. It comes down to the meaning of a ‘testimonial’. If someone is claiming a ‘testimonial’ of divine intervention shouldn’t they have some reason to actually believe that divine intervention has actually occurred. I mean, there are many practical reasons why this particular prayer may have seemed to have been answers. A man prays to God for a laptop. Then during his normal life activities he also quite innocently tells other people that he would really like to have a laptop computer. Word gets around, and someone has one they are no longer using and gives it to him. All of a sudden a deity is given credit for having intervened. I understand the original poster’s desire to give God credit. And he even stated that he believes that we should give public testimonials when God answers our prayers. But from a sincere point of view, are these testimonials true? By that, I mean, are they actual accounts of divine intervention? As Rabbit points out. Why would God intervene to get this guy a laptop computer, whilst allowing all the terrible suffering to go on in the world? If we’re going to believe in an intervening God it only makes sense to ask, why and when does this God intervene? There have been many very sincere good people who have prayed for much more serious things (like the health and welfare of others) and those prayers apparently were completely ignored. So even if it’s true that God intervenes, the one thing that we know with absolute certainty is that this supposedly intervening God is extremely undependable. Sad, but true. The only prayer I have to this God is, … Dear God, Please answer prayers from the most needy people first. Amen. If this is the only prayer he ever answers from me I’ll be tickled pink. I just love you James. That was very well said. Kind and well thought out. Spoken in a way that makes good sense. I do understand the concerns and questions. But, me being me and having the belief I have; I have to believe that there are prayers that get answered if the prayee is sincere in his belief and understanding. I have had very simple and strange prayers answered in just a few hours. Out of nowhere. And then prayers that I dearly wanted answered to no avail. Life is strange and there will always be questions to which an answer cannot be found, or given. Rabbit....thank you. Kat |

ok...again...this thread was just about someone happy and thankful. why argue? it was meant to debate and there was no question. it was only how he feels
whether God had something to do with his laptop or not...doesn't matter. It's him being thankful. Maybe God wanted him to have a laptop to use to help fix the problems of the world take the thread for what it is. Can't we just say way to go or whatever instead of bashing? |

It's him being thankful. Maybe God wanted him to have a laptop to use to help fix the problems of the world take the thread for what it is. Can't we just say way to go or whatever instead of bashing? Ok I will tell you exactly why this so offends me. I figured out a long time ago that miracles did not happen. While I was still a strong Christian I could see in that no miracles were happening in our time. I could figure with my own mind that if God did miracles then we would not have free will and finally I knew that we were taught to have "faith" in god. If you prayed for God to put a puppy in your hands and pooof one appeared there, then you would have KNOWLEDGE of God. Faith would no longer exist. You do not have to like or dislike this info I am just giving you every thought in my head about Miracles since I was about 25. When I was a Christian I would try to point out to people in my Church the ramifications of what they were saying if they believed in miracles. That we did not have free will and that our faith was so weak that we needed to test God to make sure he was there. I just could not understand why these people always wanted more, more, more. Move ahead many years and I am married and my second son is almost 2 and my wife is pregnant with my Daughter. We go into the Dr to get the results of a test on my second son. We are told by the Dr that he has SMA and that the life expectancy of kids with it is 3 years old and the baby had a 1 in 4 chance of havening it too. His muscles will waste away, similar to lou Gehrigs disease, until he becomes to weak to breath. Today he is 8 years old and still going strong. He is very physically weak and has to use a power wheel chair. He has a short life span and will never walk and barley has the strength to feed himself. He is the greatest kid a parent could ever have. He is so happy, so smart, so sweat. People just love to be around him. His sister did not have it. I don't think you can imagine how maddening it is to have someone come up to you and say " God only gives Children like this to people who can handle it" Don't they understand what they are saying, that means if I was a little weaker my son would walk. How stupid can they be? I did not do anything to put my son in this situation. It is just how nature works. A genetic roll of the dice. Even my in laws will come and say we are praying for a miracle for your son. I ask what miracles exactly? They say that he will be cured. I try to point out how offensive that thought is to me. Like are they saying that my son is somehow less of a person just because he cannot walk. He is a great kid, and I do not think a short life span makes life less wonderful. There are plenty of people that get to a ripe old age and are nothing but bitter and mean. Think about what you are saying when you claim that God will selfishly bend the rules of the Universe just to please you. |

this thread was about someone wanting to just say he's happy and
thankful...he wasn't asking for a debate You will get a great response posting a new thread for it. I don't know why you won't |

What I find offensive is the idea of using god as a sort of One-stop-shopping...why are people always asking for god to give them things, get them things, etc...want a laptop? hey, here's a novel concept...GO BUY ONE....cant afford it? LEARN TO LIVE WITHOUT ONE how about praying for world peace? an end to the crisis in the middle east? that no child born is an unwanted child....just once Id love to see a real miracle...but hell, if everyone is praying for laptops, winning lotto numbers, a brand new mercedes...then yeah...guess the backlog keeps piling up and the world is going to just have to wait.... |
