OK, so I do not think I downloaded the right one. As it only took about 15 minutes to download and about 5 minutes to burnhuh I put the CD in to try it out and it Just gave me three options to install either Firefox, Firebird or Abiworld. Do you have any idea if that is right?

And will this boot from disk? As the computer I am about to install it on does not really have an OS. So I want to be sure I am going to be going into there computer with a right disc.

I should also add this is the site I downloaded from:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

OK, totally separate question. Just thought I would add it here instead of making a new board. Can you buy face plates for DVD burners? I am thinking about getting a new case and well my computer is write right now with a white burner. My new case is going to be black and well I like things to match.

Okay..will try to help you out a bit:

CD face plate - you *could* buy them yes..but if you are a little handy with tape and spray paint - remove the plastic, and spray it whatever color you wish. Little more effort, you can paint case and all to whatever color suits your fancy.

Ubuntu -
From that page, hopefully you selected Desktop, Ver 7.1. stamdard. The file should be around 640 Mb roughly (page says 700 Mb) Once you burn the ISO to CD, turn off computer, and boot from your CD. That may take a little while - it is a CD.

As stated - just take the options you need, but recommend for you GNOME desktop, and pick all the games and "Office" type apps that are available. Ubuntu is pretty good for a default set up - so let it make most of the choices for you.

KDE is another desktop - but I think most Windows users prefer the GNOME desktop. Either one are just shells of the same O/S - so it is just a preference really.

Thank you so much for the information. I am thinking I did it right. I guess we shall see. It just seemed really quick for the download and burning.

The download does seem to be too fast - but if it does not boot properly, go find a download manager and try it again. It usually takes me closer to an hour to D/L the isos.

I looked at others and it seems to be the right one. Maybe I just got lucky with a fast down load and burn. I hope. Cross your fingers and toes for me.

Whisper here is a link: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

you need to select type of pc and location to download from, then burn-it as iso and this should give you a live cd.

Thanks but it kinda sound to me that she didn't get the whole download distro or not the live cd version...file size is suppose to be 695MB.

But if she all ready got it cool...she should be up and running soonglasses

Thanks guys. I got it to load but it only worked when the CD was in. When I took the CD out I get getting a black screen with all kinds of error messages, and it was making a weird grinding noise. The CD ROM did not even want to open. But oh well. I fixed it. Just rebooted and managed to fix the XP that was on there but nit working.

that's cause it's the Live CD version, meaning in order to use it,the cd has to stay in the drive.you can't install it and boot it from your hard drive.

i would suggest doing a search for a different version of Ubuntu and try again

As pointed out..that is the LiveCD.
I believe that if you looked on the ribbon bar - top of the screen, there would be an option to actually install it.

From the site:

Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer.

I believe Ubuntu gives the option....

I know this is a week old, but just FYI if you want to use your CD tray while running off a LiveCD, you must load the entire CD into ram. I believe Ubuntu has a boot option for this, it may (???) even be "toram."

Then you can use your cd while running Ubuntu from ram only.

Oh, and this makes it run wicked fast, too.

(Oh, and I think the confusion about whether you can install Ubuntu from LiveCD is due to the Ubunutu people changing their minds - I recall them initially installing from live CD and later having two different CDs. )
