I just installed Fedora on my laptop. And when I start it up it asks me for my user name and password. I enter in what I had entered in the installation, but it is not allowing to log in. Keeps telling me that it is wrong. Is there away to retrieve it just in case by chance I maybe doing something wrong (even though I do not think I am)? Or even any other solution to this problem? I really do not want to put Vista back on. Cause I had the same log in problem when I installed it on my desktop as well.

It's best to set your computer so that you can see your password when typing it in - write it down if you cannot do that - then take a shot of the screen for future reference. I've gone back to Win XP. Vista is an unbaked cake that they put icing on before sticking it in the oven. The Mac is light years ahead of it and almost everything works. I use both.

My boyfriend did it for me and I know that he did an fdisk.

Are your usernames and passwords case-sensitive? If so, you will want to make sure you don't put in a capital letter instead of a lower-case one.

Also- make sure you haven't typed a wrong or errant letter somewhere, as most failed log-in attempts were cause by a wrong letter being punched.

Other than that, the only other way to correct the problem would be to check with the Fedora forums and see what the users there say. At worst, you might need to reinstall Fedora and start from scratch- this will suck if you've got a bunch of other stuff installed, as reinstalling will nuke everything.

Trust me if I had access to an XP disc I would of put it on when I first got the laptop. I can only dream about owning a Mac right now. So well if Linux does not work then I am afraid that Vista is my only other option. I know it sucks trust me I know. That is the reason I took it off my laptop and put Linux on it.

You should not have to do a fdisk and reinstall...

Go here.
Everything you need to know is listed.
