I really ought to quit smoking. I sometimes why I even started in the first place. ohwell

I'm interested in hearing from all of you ex-smokers who made the successful transition to a smoke free life. Maybe, it'll inspire and motivate me to take more progressive steps to successfully do it.

I honestly don't think I can quit "cold-turkey".

What seems to exacerbate my addiction also, is my love of black coffee, as well.

How easy was it to get a prescription from your doctor?

i woulnt go with chantix...one of the side effects is that it can promote or cause sucidal thoughts... my friend went on it...and she got them...and she's the least sucidal person i know...she's off it now...

yes you can quit cold turkey. i did it. it wasn't easy.

the way i did it was by setting goals for myself.
the first day is the hardest. gotta stay busy and
away from friends who smoke and smoking situations.
take aspirin or whatever for the headache if you
have it...but it is easiest if there is a big push
at work or something to keep you occupied.

then, if successful, try for 3 days, then a week.
i could not cheat or it was all over. after a week
the need is greatly diminished. go for 2 weeks then
a month. then you are really free of it. once you
have a few days under your belt then it is 1) easier
cause the drug level is way down and 2) you have
built a little history so it gives confidence and
also something to lose if you have to start all over
again...

it took several tries. but i made it stick for good
in July...of 1992.

good luck. it may be one of the toughest things you
ever accomplish but it is worth it.

Thank-you, I'm getting used to the hair cut it might take awhile..... To get Chantix all you need to do is make an appointment with your doctor and he will consult you on quiting and give you the script. Side effects for me was headaches and stomach upset, kinda like a mild flu but not as bad, I sucked it up and stuck with it....Do not want to go through basic going through withdraw...Doing Guard is hard enough...

I woke up one morning about 3 months ago and decided that it was time to quit. So I did.

Every time I wanted one, I would say to myself "If I still want one in 15 minutes I'll go buy some" then I would get busy and that 15 minutes would pass, and I would do that every time so if I missed my window of oppertunity, Ihad to set a new one.

I cheat when I drink, but only when I drink, I went from about 120 cigarettes a week to 5-10 a week.... I think that's pretty damn good.....

"The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" by Alan Carr. $14 delivered from Buy.com.

I bought it, read it and then looked up an saw that I had 3 cartons left so I waited till I was out and stopped. That was 32 days ago.

I cheated the first day and took one hit off of a butt. The first weekend (days 7 & 8) were tough but I got thru them. Now it doesn't bother me at all. I've been in bars (I'll never say where) and around friends and customers that smoke and it just doesn't bother me.

Some things I've discovered are;

I can smell things now.
I notice that I have BO in the morning.
My right thumb and index finger aren't yellow anymore.
I don't cough anymore.
I am saving $100 a month. KY has cigs for $16/carton.

Here's a couple of things that may help you stop.

Self hypnosis. When you go to bed at night, relax your whole body and repeat in your mind over and over. "I will never smoke again." I am a non-smoker."

Remember if you have just one more cigarette you will have to start all over again.

The average smoker will spend $100,000 dollars on cigarettes in their lifetime.

Every time you have a cigarette, think about how nasty the taste is in your mouth. Nobody ever lit up their first cig and said, "gosh, this tastes good".

The revelation that you will never ever smoke again will come after five days to three weeks. For me it was about 9 days.

I have told very few people that I have quit. Nobody in my family knows. I'm not sure why I'm doing this.

I hope this helps you and if you have any questions, feel free to email me.

I quit smoking 25 years ago. I realized the only thing holding me back was partying. The 2 for me went hand in hand. I traded cigarette time for running time.

By the way I have a son who smokes and was trying to talk him into going on Chant*x. It has just come out it has been associated with causing mental problems in some. Cutting down til I stopped worked the best. It took 3 years.

I did'nt even crave them. Then one day hanging out with a friend I just had "one".It takes alot of will power ..if you put them down leave them down! cause' one turns into two & two into three. smokin yikes

Just start running or walking in place. I gained 5 lbs. and it drove me crazy but I've known some to gain 40. It's worth it. I took off the 5 lbs. and cloves give taste, while not loaded with calories.
