Topic: convenience over security | |
---|---|
i just read that even if you erase the data(text messages included)from
your cell phone it can still be retrieved. they said that the retreival software is relatively inexpensive and people can buy old cell phones off ebay and get the previous owners information and old text messages. they did an experiment and found multimillion dollar contract information, credit card information and bank account numbers. what do you think about the risks that people expose thereselves to for the convenience of technology |
well, I cannot imagine the population of people negatively affected by
this is really huge. My mean, Joe Podunk from eastern nowhere probably doesn;t care at all about someone getting his drinking buddies phone numbers. |
it's not just the phone numbers though, do you have any idea how many
people text message and the types of sensitive information that is passed using it |
I would say you if you have something that is "sensitive" you shouldn't
be sending it on a public phone. I mean, those signals can be intercepted anyways right? |
yeah i know but alot of people do it anyway. it's like buying things on
the internet, even with all the security features people can still easily hack into it but there are people who uses cc and do online bill payment and online banking and the number of them people keeps increasing all the time because it's more convenient. the text messages they found had cc numbers and bank accoun numbers all through them. that's just what i was trying to say is that in the rush to make things easier it's creating more opportunities for things to be intercepted and the theives are harder to catch if they do get it. i'm all for progress but sometimes the risks out number the positives and people just aren't using their head |
i hesitated to get a cell phone but i would never put anything like that
on it |
me either why put that on a cell?
this is like the age old dichotomy of security over convenience. You
have to give up one to attain the other. |
see that's the thing, the old ways are still much safer but they are
less convenient. i would still rather go to the bank than to do it on line. it's not a matter of me hating the idea but i was just wondering at what point people decide that even though it's risky they are just too busy it's kinda crazy the lenghts people will go and the risks that they will take to save a few minutes |
they did conveience over security at the airports too once upon a time
yes so true about the airports!!
I don't have any of that info on my cell, so it doesn't affect me.
Yippee! |
I don't keep any kind of info like that in my cell phone...but I do a
lot of texting...OMG I hope no one reads those!!! I will be going to hell for sure! |
