I was born and raised in Edmonton back before seat belt laws were invented. I have a sort of love/hate attitude towards "the chuck" now because I have seen how much it has changed over the years.
I currently live to the North West of Edmonton most of the time because I can (and it is gorgeous this time of year). I consider central Alberta a larger community that spans beyond the city borders (as those of us who like to drive our automobiles do) but Edmonton is always the center attraction for business. I LOVE to drive to the city on a regular basis (zoom zoom). I lived in Edmonton until I was 24 but have always worked in the city or done business there. I left e-town in the 80's and lived to the east on a hobby farm for a few years, then, back downtown in the city for seven years. I still haven't decided if I'm a city boy or country bumpkin (please don't take away my Led Zeppelin and White Stripes CD's). I know things about Edmonton that would amaze you. I remember working for the Edmonton Journal as a "rag boy" growing up. They used to have these wooden shacks built on neighborhood corners and us "slave wage" recipients would huddle there in minus 30 degree weather. Each shack would have a small wood burning stove for heat (people would be arrested today for a teenage entertainment concept like that). Without even knowing what a "fire extinguisher" looked like, us brave paperboys would burn left over remains from the bundles (strings and wrappings) in these stoves to hinder the onset of frostbite (which we all got anyway). Although I must admit, that was the best place to pick a fight after school (and learn other great boyhood skills). |

Why dont you like edmonton? I don't really have a list of dislikes about Edmonton (I probably could make one if in the right mood) but if I had to say one thing, it would be that I think the city is 25 years behind fixing the traffic issue. Let's all hope the Anthony Henday does what it promises. :-) |
