and...are you a good lord or an evil lord?? I'm not a Lord yet...I'm just a Lordling. In training, as one might say. I don't know about good or evil, but I am, in sooth, a just, vengeful (and sometimes merciful) Lordling. |

As an atheist and a skeptic, I try to limit my magical thinking to occasional moments of vanity and revenge. But lately I’ve found myself wishing that if the Rapture is on the level, it would happen soon . . . I mean real soon. The Rapture is the name given to a future event in which Jesus descends from heaven and gathers up all Christian fundamentalists [a.k.a. Christian Right] and swooshes them up bodily to heaven, but not before they’ve jettisoned their clothes and jewelry and all forms of prostheses, including pompadour hairpieces and inflatable bouffant support bladders. Before I get too far into this, I want it understood that I’m not wishing these folks ill. On the contrary, I’m wishing them what they’ve always wanted—an eternity of enjoying the unchallenged moral certitude they were never quite able to fully enjoy here on Earth, but which nonetheless caused the rest of us no end of misery. The signs for finally seeing the backside of the Christian Right are encouraging. According to raptureready.com, the Rapture Index (omens portending the Rapture) stands at 163, the highest it’s been since September 11, 2001 when it peaked at its all-time high of 182. I don’t know what the numbers mean either. But I’m not making this up. It appears Jesus is getting his transition team in place, what with the recent raptures—albeit by conventional means—of the Rev. D. James Kennedy, godfather of the American Dominionist [a.k.a. theofascist] movement and hater of our secular constitution, and the Rev. Jerry Falwell, founder of the Moral Majority and hater of all people he could think of to hate. I do wish the Lord would get his jesters assembled and move on this. Think what the Rapture will mean to those of us left behind. Twenty-three percent of the 208 million adults in America identify themselves as either Pentecostal or Charismatic Christians [a.k.a. Rapture-ready]. In the event of the Rapture up to 50 million workers will be leaving their jobs without clocking out. The number of positions vacated will be five times as many needed to wipe out the country’s unemployment, leaving the rest of us in a workers’ paradise. Affirmative action be damned! It’s “trickle up” economics at work here. Not only will our career paths be enhanced, but we’ll have a chance at longer, healthier lives by taking the untold billons of dollars President Bush is currently funneling into the Christian Right’s faith-based coffers to save “Americans one soul at a time" and reallocating them to stem cell research and universal health care, which will save considerably more of an American than just his or her ethereal soul. Along with vocational upgrades and improved health, we’ll no longer have to wonder, “is our kids learning?” High school grads having trouble gaining admission to one of our over-crowded universities will have immediate access to the vacant desks—and possibly iPods—left by the tens of thousands of Rapture-ready students attending America’s 102 “Christ-centered” colleges, which will be under new management and begging for warm bodies. And guys, speaking of warm bodies, the universities will be flush with coeds since far fewer teenage girls will be home taking care of their babies—there were 435,000 teen mothers last year. The hundreds of millions of federal dollars spent annually on abstinence-only sex education [a.k.a. religious dogma] in our public high schools will now fund comprehensive sex education programs that promote safe and effective birth control methods. Let’s face it. It was only the Christian Right who thought hormone-pumped primates would ever stop “doing it.” By the way, do I even need to mention that with the Rapture-ready blissfully ensconced behind the pearly gates the rest of us will be left in peace to enjoy our bedrooms and our most personal intimate relationships on our own terms? Unarguably though, the highlight of the Rapture will be finding out which of the “born-again” politicians are left on the ground. Unless someone has been lying to the American people—perish the thought—we stand to lose 48 Senators, 186 Representatives, four Supreme Court justices, seven presidential hopefuls, and one hopeless president. If it turns out—highly unlikely though it is— that the 2008 presidential frontrunners of both parties are missing on Rapture-plus-one, we’ll enjoy the remaining election season with candidates who’ve always been willing to talk about more substantive issues than their most recent meet and greet with the Lord. The God-talk will be in heaven where it belongs. Consider this . . . with a smile. If the Democrats with Dennis Kucinich and Al Gore—we can talk him into it—or the Greens with Cynthia McKinney and Ralph Nader can’t defeat the unraptured and unrepentant Ron Paul and Rudy Giuliani on their own merits, we’ll now own the Supreme Court. There is a downside. We know damn-good-and-well who’ll be sitting at his Oval Office desk with a “fooled you again” smirk on his mug on Rapture-plus-one. But keep in mind, we’ll still have Section 4 of Article II of the Constitution and we’ll have the votes and we’ll have the prison. Keep in mind also, gods mostly help those who help themselves. Having imagined all the above, my thinking is not so magical as to believe there won’t be a few post-Rapture problems. After all, according to Revelations this will be the time of the Great Tribulation and we’ll still have Satan [a.k.a. your choice] to wrestle with. But with the Christian Right enjoying eternity . . . well . . . who cares where, we’ll have only one Devil in the ring at a time. And he’ll be the one carrying a pitchfork not a Bible. Author’s note: Hopefully Jesus is a not a strict sectarian and swooshes up Jewish and Muslim fundamentalists as well. WHAT? I have the right to hope. _______ About author Robert Weitzel lives in Middleton, WI. His essays regularly appear in The Capital Times in Madison, WI. dont doubt the sincerity of those believers and I am sorry I can be confrontational, at times i wish I could believe in a supreme being as it would make our existance so simple. I have a hard time excepting things on faith alone. You see I do believe in evelution as the fossalised evidence is all around us and you stumble accross fossiles all the time if you spend any time at all along the creeks and rivers in our area. When darwin came to the gallipigos islands he found many creatures found no were else on earth as each evolved in there unique and isolated circumstances. did god play a hand in all this? some may say yes but again the proof is in the fossils.........now did a supreme being create life the universe and everything, maybe but does he match the descriptions laid down by our varriouse religions? I find it highly doubtfull....but thats just my opinion and I do sincerly think if we all lived as JESUS preached to love thy neighbor and take care of each other the world will be a better place

To suppose the supposition that everything started from nothing could be something of a dilemma, except for that tiny little fact that without the all consuming conception of interpretation of the inconceivable there would actually be nothing and without any predetermined ideal that emptiness came from a universe that supplied all that there could be in fact without the nothing of the void that holds and recollects our past we have been and our future that we haven’t yet experienced.
So, if you as a person were to decide that everything you knew was on the basis that you came into the world with a greater knowledge than those who had existed on earth before you then how could you even begin to perceive the idea that you know all that there is to be learned? In fact the reckoning to know or understand, that which has not been understood before without definable language, is actually nigh on impossible. My question is why do we reckon we can? In fact that thing that is greater than the non is definitely inconceivable. It is potentially a force that we cannot reckon with because it never existed in the first place. How could it if it hasn’t even been created yet? I have come to the conclusion that whatever I see before me is merely an apparition in that none of it is real. What I consider to be fact lies in the undetermined potential of describing the absolute that nobody has yet perceived and I suggest is the possibility of a whole, some of what has not been described before. That is my definition of all that is possible within a realm of the narrow-minded thinker and the bottomless pit that we are yet to discover. That mystery which hides the infinite could be an answer to such a definition according to the Oxford English dictionary. But then again I’m good at making things up so it’s quite certain that I am on some path toward a conclusion in a realm of what is possible. And what if in fact there is no such thing in either, there is nothing after and everything has never actually existed? |

All I have to say is , people had really better think about what will really happen when the rapture happens , that is why we must be ready all the time and try to live Christ like as best we can , except Jesus as Lord and Saviour , he came to earth and bore our sins and diseases , he was crucified and then arose and is in heaven to return for his church someday... this is real people and who jokes of this is really in for a real awakening.. I'll pray for all the unbeleivers of Christ and pray they will realize before it is too late . God Bless and Keep You All.!!!! Keep the Faith Brother... |

All of this rapture talk makes me laugh, it sounds much like the Moon Bop cult that all wore Nike tennis shoes and had bunk beds, does anyone but me see the irony in the two? It may not be called the Moon Bop, but it was something like that.
Now on to this whole "Jesus saves" therory, I have seen first hand people who were devout saved Christians, they lived good clean lives, were "saved" and then died miserable deaths, where they died slow and painful deaths, I have been at a bed side when someone like this passed, I saw the pain in their eyes, and the wanting for it all just to be over. Is this how your god treats it's most religious people? Is this his divine plan? Well screw your god. It is a little easier to believe that God simply manages what happens here, he does not interfear at all. He's not Santa, making a list and checking it twice, to find out who's naughty and nice. If we are truely all of God's children, then we are all of God's children. Just like if you have children of your own, and one misbehaves, or is a constant misbehaver. You don't turn your back on them do you? You don't leave them out of your will do you? All of you "fundy" need to take a good hard look at what you do and spew around town, would your parents ground the misbehaver or would they ground both the misbehaver and the antaginizer? My parents would have grounded us both, but then I have good parents. |

it seems as though you may need to do a little more homework. if Jesus DOES come back to gather up his people, then that would mean that all along there was a God, you were wrong, and the prophecies in the Bible are indeed going to occur. this is where you need to do a little more studying. obviously if all of the preceding events happened, then the great tribulation that was prophesied will also happen. this will leave you AND your friends that were left here with you in a whole world of complete pain and utter chaos. think of it this way.... if you believe in God and live right...and you end up being wrong, then you have lost nothing. if you believe there is no God and you are wrong....yea well. basically, you are screwed. You say we lose nothing by following Christianity. I see many nuns and priest's that have given up marriage for this book. I have seen people that have tossed out there own children because they were gay. I have seen gay teens kill themselves because they cannot believe that their family or society will ever accept them. The saddest part of all of these issues is that they are all based on love. How can loving somebody be a sin? I'm afraid anyone that follows that god has a lot to lose. I think all your morality is at stake in that religion. |
